Question about detonation
« on: December 07, 2006, 08:39:02 AM »
Today I set out to get some chrony readings on my new air rifle with 8.3 gr pellets.  I decided to shoot a few heavies (about 20) first to help clear out lubricant.  The first 8.3 grain pellet I put in after that went supersonic with that telltale "crack".  I wasn't pleased.  I know that detonation is BAD, BAD, BAD for an air rifle but I thought that 20 or so heavies wouldve been more than enough...obviously not.  Generally how many heavies do you guys shoot through a new air rifle to clear the extra lube before switching back to the "normal" weight pellets?  Or, do you just tear into the rifle, clean and re-apply lubrication, albeit more sparingly to get beyond this "detonation" phase?  Thanks.

I've only got one springer that had enough exsessive lube from the factory to cause combustion well into my 3rd or 4th tin of pellets, and that was my HW77k. Mind you it never detonated or made any loud cracking sounds when fired, but it was effecting consistency and causing slow damage to the spring and seal. After at least 1000 pellets it was still smoking, so I opted to dissasemble it and clean it out. There was some heat damage to the piston seal, and still enough lube left in the gun to combust 'til the seal would have been toast or  spring broken.

Every other springer I have either didn't deisel at all, or only did so for the first few shots. HTH,

Mulby

.

Yare probably getting a condition known as "dieseling", where the oil ignites and burns from theair being heated by compression and burning like in an engine. It makes noise and such, but isn't anywhere near as bad as true detonation.

Detonation, like what dynamite does,is aspecial type ofexplosion that can bend and break things.

Just want to pass that along.

I guess you're never to old to learn something new.  I thought that dieseling was when you got just smoke out of the barrel/chamber and that detonation was when you got the loud "crack" sound.  So then I shouldn't be afraid if a few shots make that sound??
