Air Arms S410 ERB .22 Pellet Performance
« on: January 14, 2009, 10:14:15 AM »
In failing late afternoon light, I took the AA410 out after work and managed 67 shots off a single 200 BAR fill shooting at 3/4ths power.  I had Beeman FTS loaded in both magazines, 10 rounds in one, but only 7 in the other.  Shooting at 30 yards off the tripod rest, I put 7 FTS rounds (green) in the center target with not too good a group, but just to set up and warm up a bit.  Then I reloaded with Crosman CP's for a 10-shot group (top left), then with RWS Superdomes (orange) for another 10-shot group (top right).  Then I reloaded with CP's and shot 2 x 10-shot groups (bottom left, bottom right).  Then I picked up the second magazine loaded with Beeman FTS and put another 10-shot group in the center target.  On the second try, most of that 10-shot group was the 1-holer (green) -- much tighter after the warm up.  Then I reloaded with CPs and shot the last 10-shot group in the center of the second target.  Finishing pressure approximately 100 bar.  The light was lousy by the time I finished, and worse, the setting sun was almost in my face.  I literally used the rear scope cover, opened, to shade the sun for the last 10 shots.

I believe that the AA S410 ERB / .22 is fully capable of one hole groups at 30 yards, probably with either FTS or CP's.  But in this rifle, Superdomes pretty much suck.  Note that one of the Superdome holes is a jagged oval -- this was a ricochet off the side of the face of the pellet trap, wide right.  Wish I had more time and more daylight to shoot, as this was rushed and not the best of conditions.  But in my hands, I believe the AA will shoot at least as accurately at 30 yards as the BSA Scorpion .177 and probably better.  I am still longing to be able to stretch out at 50 yards under better conditions and see what both the rifles will do.  I hate winter, leaving for work before daylight and (usually) coming home long after dark.  BTW, it was a very chilly 40 F degrees in SC this afternoon, much colder tonight and the next 3 nights.

Here are the targets and the annotated targets showing the groupings, FTS in green, Superdomes in orange, and CP's white.  30 mm (1.2 inch) bulls.

Looks like you need about 4 clicks of left windage on your scope to zero those CPs.  :)

Yes, but I was shooting pretty quick and didn't want to zero for a particular pellet just yet, or play with the scope any until I figure out which actually groups the "best".  I really need to get the air rifle on a bench and do some critical shooting at 50 yards.  And I am still pretty much ignorant of what will be the best power setting for that pellet when I find it.  The PCP thing is still all new to me.  But the CP's look pretty darned good, and the scope isn't far off.  Thanks.

Don't know if it would carry over, Tommy, but my Cyclone is most consistent at medium power, which translates to about 850 fps with CPH's.  I suspect that somewhere around that same velocity will be best for your AA.  My S400 is right there with Eun Jins, and they're incredibly consistent and accurate.  But hey, I could be totally out to lunch, too :-)!  I've gotten similar results with Superdomes, I don't think they do well in rifles with choked barrels.  Looks like you need to try some heavies.  Later.

Looks like the CP's are the ones that's grouping at that distance and power.  The CPHP's from a box are the ones I use in my AA410s carbine also.....but I've only got to shoot them out to 20 meters only 2 times....they group excellent at 1/2 power.   As daved said...I think at high power these strong PCP's need heavier pellets.
Gamo: Expotec .177 + Big Cat .177 + Viper .177 + Whisper .177, Hammerli Titan .177, Diana model 24 .177, RWS-Diana P5 Magnum pistol .177, Crosman: G1 Extreme .177 + Storm XT .177 + Sierra Pro .177 + 1377 pistol .177, Air Arms S410SL .22, BSA Scorpion T10 .22, FX Cyclone .177, Remington Air Master 77 .177 + BB\'s,

RE: JSB's Exact Express & Exact Jumbos's outshoot all others in my AAS410

.22 JSB's  Exact Express (14.3 gr), Exact Jumbos (15,9 gr), & JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy (18.1) out shoot all other pellet types in my AA S410.  No contest & I've tried just about all of the .22 round nose pellets out there, including FTS Double Gold, Kodiaks, & Kodiak Double Golds, CP's & CPH's.  This is out to 30 yards.  The heavier pellets like Kodiaks may group better in the 50+ yard ranges.

Just my experience, other AA's may different pellets.
