My new machine.....
« on: December 10, 2006, 02:03:34 PM »

This is what my 1377 .22 cal conversion ended up looking like. It has a Flat top piston and steel pump pin(Roy at Mountain Air), 14" Crosman barrel (2260 barrel cut to size), 2289 barrel band, Crosman steel breach kit, super cool ultra custom maple and walnut grips and pump arm(courtesy of me), purple Crosman trigger shoe, 2300 Custom muzzle brake, reworked valve(ported, polished, resprung, shaved flat to match the piston, etc....), and a slightly shortened trigger spring (better than stock, but nothing to be proud of), topped with a BSA 30MM Red Dot. I built this thing over the last few weeks knowing the whole time that I didn't like pumpers. So I got an idea, and today Joel from Airgun Artisans came over to talk about some web stuff and brought along his 2260, which is pretty much stock as far as I can tell with the exception of a Crooked Barn Breach. So the deal was made, and I hope that he is very happy with it. It shoots about 530fps on 10 pumps in .22, which is pretty good as the .177 it came as doesn't shoot much faster, at 15 pumps I was pulling 590+. Anyways, since it's no longer part of my collection and i never even got to show it off, here she is:

It was a fun project, I hope Joel enjoys it as much as I enjoyed building it,

Wow.

That thing is really, really nice.  I sure hope Joel will appreciate it cause it certainly sounds like a serious winner.

Beautiful job with it.

That really is a beutiful gun you have there. I was curious, is there a way to increase the compression of the stroke so say instead of 10 pumps id would take only 5. Im shure they would be a heck of alot harder to pump but I was curious.

Thanx for the compliment, this was really the first custom gun I built from the ground up.

As far as increasing pressure with each stroke, the only mod that does that is the flat top piston and valve arrangement.  Unless you can somehow make yourself a larger ID pump tube and matching piston, you aren't going to easily increase the stroke length, so the same volume per pump regardless.  With the flat top piston you're doing a couple things.  First off the piston I used is much more solid than the stock piston, so it doesn't flex under pressure and create headspace between the valve and the piston face.  Headspace is going to be compressed air, air that is NOT in the valve, this is why you can only pump a stock 1377 so far before it isn't doing anything...that headspace is under the same pressure as the air in the valve, so nothing more goes in.  This is the same idea behind the flat top piston, the flat top piston also creates a tight fit to the face of the valve and gets rid of even more headspace than the ill fitting stock piston with the cone seal.  So when this is all done, you are actually putting more air into the valve per pump because there is less lost to valve to piston headspace.

I could go on forever, but if I do I might start sounding like "He Who We Must Not Mention", so I'll leave it at what I have explained already:)

Roy Weid at Mountain Air made my piston, which is also adjustable btw, so you can adjust its length to take up any headspace that is created as parts wear out, it's pretty slick, it also has an oil wiper ring to keep dust and junk out of the tube and the seals happy, and also has two piston o-rings to keep the whole thing tight as a drum.  Pretty decent increase in FPS from a fairly simple mod, and yes, less pumping for more FPS, although with this mod you can also go past the factory 10 pumps because you are still putting air in because of the more efficeint nature of this setup.

It was fun to build, and I'm more of a builder than a shooter, although I love shooting too.  Something about molding some parts together into something cool has always been my thing.  Thank you for your kind words.

Thank you for the kind words.  I've learned if you're doing something you really enjoy it doesn't take much "born with" talent, it takes determination and time to learn to do what you love doing well.  Many people out there with talent, not nearly as many doing something with it.  I quit a job 6 years ago where I could REALLY show my talent because although I was exceptionally good at it, I never loved doing it.  Bummer it payed 2X as much as I make now, but I am a whole lot happier.

Just something to chew on,
