CFX Scope Rail......
« on: January 19, 2009, 05:48:02 AM »
Howdy......Just installed a GRT III in my CFX.......as I was working on it, I noticed a lot of oil on in the grooves on top where the scope rail clamps on. I'd think it'd be a good idea to clean the oil outta there so the scope rail doesn't move from recoil. Anybody know how to remove the plastic piece on the very end of the gun(cap....maybe)??  Seems this is the only way to get the rail off. If I can get the rail off without major surgery, I could also drill another hole in it for the stop pin, so I can get the scope in a different position.............Raoul

On most of them if you remove the stock, you can just slide the cover off. If it is a hard plastic cover then it might require removing the block cross pin if it goes through the cover and you don't want to do that without a spring compressor. Someone mentioned to me the other day that his did have the hard plastic cover but I haven't seen one like that yet.

Hi, Bob,
While I was installing your trigger, I tried to remove that plastic end cap. It wouldn't budge. I think that pin is holding it in, and I didn't want to take a chance on removing the pin. Looks like it is holding all the inards in the tube.

Yes Raoul, it is under a heavy spring load so don't take it out without using a spring compressor. The spring, guide, spring block and retaining block will all come flying out the back end. Very dangerous.

Hey Raouel:

Yes, you would need to remove the cross pin to remove that cover.

Bob, I got a PM from Splash. He told me to loosen the Lug behind the trigger that the bolt that holds the stock goes into. 1/2 a turn and the plastic cap slid right out. Good forum for info.
Question: Now that I have the scope rail off, is there any reason why I can't attatch the mount(one piece)where the rail was??  I'd like to get the scope a little lower, and that would do the trick. I guess I'd just have to drill & tap the mount for a stop pin to go into the same hole as the stop pin in the rail. Any thoughts...................Raoul

*Very* interesting. Thats exactly what my Whisper's endcap looks like. They must have changed the CFX design a little on that. My CFXs have a much different endcap, which just comes right off as soon as the action is out of the stock. Hmmm....I wonder if the CFX and Whisper stocks are now the same?

Although at first I didn't think so you do  have the latest cap then.

Initially when I glanced at the picture, it looked like the one with the cross pin. Looking at the picture again closely, I see that it doesn't fit real tight into the action and locked securely and tightly in place although it doesn't really matter.

They actually made three versions of that cap and because they had difficulty getting the original cap in without damaging it they eventually designed the cap to be open ended. The original had the cross pin holes in it, the second one had only the lug pin hole only in it and the very latest one has no holes it and are shaped to be held in only by the compression of the lug. Gene and I discussed the differences several times and wondered why they didn't redesign it and in fact, cut several of them quite similar to the way that they are now designed.

They sure must have made a bunch of the originals because a few of the late production guns are still coming through with them.

I'm not sure about the rail as I never had a reason to make the change but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work. I'm sure some of the other members might have done it and can tell you more.
