Chinese Rifle Spring
« on: January 24, 2009, 01:22:44 PM »
I ran into this spring when I was surfing around the internet trying to learn a little more about this airgun "disease":

http://www.outdoorsportsdepot.com/8046200.html

I talked with Jeff at outdoorsportsdepot and he agreed to send me a free sample.  I don't know if this will help anyone, but here's what I got:

Length:     8"
Coils:        26
Wire:        .120"
OD:          .735"
ID:           .490"

Seems like it's close in quality to the qf2 spring, only shorter.   Seems like a lot of spacing to try it on the B3, but I'll try it if you guys think it will be any help.  Most likely it would better fit the youth model.

Anyone want this one?

I'd like to get your take on it buddy but thanks. I just pulled one of my B's apart for inspection, takes about 15 minutes since I've done this so many times hehe. I check my leather seals etc for wear but as always everything look's great but their fun to break down anyway.:) Thanks again and I'm really interested in our fellow B3 owners opinion on project's and part's. :) Here's one of my tuned B Babies, custom stock for a lefty and goodies all around. :emoticon: Ed

Henry, given those specs, I believe it will fit into a B3. And yep, its gonna take some spacin to get her right. We never know how the B3 is gonna shoot though, with that different kinda spring in it, until we try it. Seems like it would work though. Only one way to find out I guess.. Me bein the tinkerer at heart an all, well I guess I'd like to know if it works...

Seems like yer quite the tinkerer yourself there buddy. Sure is fun, aint it?

Pretty.  Are you the southpaw?

Is that the original plastic cap over the spring pin?  Mine looked like it had been through some rough times.  I'm gonna replace it by putting a cap on the end of a newly turned spring guide,
like Kev did here:

http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=12857&posts=15#M105741

It doesn't cover the ends of the pin very well, but I'm working on some ideas for that too.

Does your spring pin push in easy, or do you have to struggle with it?  I push it in almost all the way, take the gun out of the spring compressor, then put it in the vise and push the pin from the inside of the spring guide to get it all aligned.

No doubt, I like to tinker!  Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately depending on how you look at it, all my tinkering time is going to airguns lately.  The "honey-do" list has bee hopelessly forgotten!

If I had more spacers, I'd try that spring in the B3 today, but I don't.  Looks like I have a date with the McMaster Carr salesman, or the machine shop boys next door soon!

If ya have a minute, take a look at the question I asked Shadow about the spring pin and let me know your experiences.  Thanks.

I had that problem with the spring guide crosspin. It was always hard to get in and out, and then later started coming out by itself. I fixed it with a clevis pin. Now I can push it out or in with my finger once the spring compressor puts pressure on the spring guide, but it won't come out otherwise. Food for thought. Most folks don't wanna hack up the stock like I did. I'm sure there's probably a better way to do it that looks nice, but for a quick, down and dirty solution...it works great! And still does. The problem I had is detailed in the link below. Please read the whole thread. There's even pics!!!

Sorry for the late reply and yes that is the original cap for the B. My pin's in my B's all go in easy, when it's in the compressor I just apply more or less compression to line up the guide and pin hole. I have a longer pin of the same dimensions and I just slid that in first. It sticks out the other side, just push the B pin in behind it and it push's out the longer pin. :) Ed

Funny, I bought a clevis pin on Friday to try a similar approach!

I'm gonna grind the head a little thinner to fit between the action and the stock of my Industry Brand.  There seems to be plenty of room for this, but I wanted to ask for "expert" opinions before I tried this in case I was missing the obvious.  Thanks for confirming that this will work.

I'll admit that my compressor is not the best, but it seems the holes don't lineup very well.  When one side is loose, the other is in a bind.  I may need to make sure my compressor is doing the job, then re-align the holes with a drill.  I also ran with another idea that davee1 has tried in the past and am going to try to fit a clevis pin in the gap between the stock and receiver, that way I don't continue to maul the pin with a hammer!  I also think that I have been working with a pin that is too short, so I can correct that with the clevis pin mod.

About that $2 spring, I am more than willing to send it to you if you want to play with it.

Thanks for the help.

Works good!!! May look kinda funny...but hey, its easy. And its a whole lot easier to take down/put back together. Just don't grind the head so thin that it ends up breaking. Its the other side where the ball bearing is that protrudes the most. That side definately has to have a notch in the stock.

My Industry Brand has a significant amount of room on both sides of the action.  I don't think that I will have to do any mod to the stock.  I'll get a picture up asap.
