Oil
« on: January 24, 2009, 04:13:08 PM »
I need to lube the bolt on my BSA Scorpion. How  about air tool oil? My friends have an auto  parts store and they said Marvel Mystery Oil would be good. Opinions please.

Don't think penetrating oil would be the right stuff...seems like you'd want it to stay put rather than penetrate.  Bolt is not in the high pressure system and should not get on any seals (except any bolt probe seals).  I'd go with something a bit thicker.

Mostly because have it on hand for other uses, have been using one drop of synthetic outboard lower gear lube, but I'd bet that any good non-penetrating syenthetic oil would work.

I would avoid any petroleum based oil. Use a thin layer of pure silicone grease, available at dive shops or hobby stores. I bought a 1.5 oz. tub of silicone grease at a local dive shop. It cost about $6.50 and will last a very, very long time.

Thanks, I was not sure about using petroleum based oil. I will try to get some silicone grease. I have another question for you PeakChick. Occasionally the magazine does not advance when I cock my Scorpion and I dry fire. Does this ever happen to you?

I know with the BSA Micro Metric Cocking system rifles that are multi shot some folks have reported occasional problems with the magazine not advancing. My Sportsman HV uses the same mag. as your Scorpion (all multi shot BSAs use the same mag.) but the MMC system on my Ultra and Sportsman are a bit different than your Scorpion, the use a cocking button at the front of the stock to cock the sear, and a spring loaded, plunger type bolt to seat pellets. With the system my rifles use the drill is to cock the sear button first and then release and push forward the bolt. This drill seems to help avoid any mag. feed prblems, and I have never had any. With the bolt actuated sear and pellet feed what I would suggest is making sure the pellets are unformly seated in the mag., no skirts not quite seated deep enough and be positive with the bolt cocking.
