quest 1000 broken?
« on: January 27, 2009, 11:04:54 AM »
For the first 600 plus shots it was fine...for the last 30 or so it literally sounds like a cap gun when it fires and has some serious torque. I had a nutter 20 yds out today( in the past one shot no prob) and took 3 shots and not even close. To say I was *_*_*_*_*_*ed is an understatement. Any clues as to why it is producing such a sound and creating lots of torque?

Almost sounds like the spring may have gone south on you. :0 Pull her out of the stock and take a look at the spring through the cocking slot, look for uneven spring spacing or even a break in it. Sometimes the airgun will still shoot but very hard on the insides. A chrony would also give you a idea if you have one. If the piston seal is bad then lube could be getting past it, the "POP" sound. Any smoky discharge when you shoot it?. Ed

No chrony...and no smoke...and took  your advice and removed the stock... the spring looks intact and has no uneven spacing( without taking fine measurements)

Speaking from my experience,...sounds to me like your spring is shot!!! If it sounds 'scrunchy' and rough,...STOP shooting it. A broken spring up near the piston can scratch the cylinder wall and thus cause permanent damage to it. I had a similar problem, and because of the scratches, there was only so much CDT could do as far as honing the cylinder smooth again on my Quest variant. If it's still under warranty,...you can return it,....but for what,...another lame chinese rifle with a brittle spring, a poor fitting seal, and explosive oils and crap?!?!? Send it to a tuner,....ANY tuner,... and have it repaired the correct way!!!! No offence intended Mike with the "lame Chinese rifle" comment. Just my opinion. tjk

Non now Tjk....I thought you were in luv with your Crosman Sierra Pro heh heh....  Hoping my Sierra Pro would shoot as good as yours when/after I install a new spring in her.....I've cleaned up the insides and gently filed down some sharp edges.  Btw...my Storm XT....another variant of the Quest shoots great.

Srqairhead.....from what you've described....especially with the newly acquired torque and lack of power (Changes point of impact)....I would think the spring broke.

I've gotten a lot of experience with these crosman springers I've had three storms didn't like any of them returned two and sold one,My quest I realy liked but it had a badly damaged seal and after replacing it the spring broke, and now have gotten a Vantage not two months old and the spring broke in it I can always tell it's the spring after a few shots because of the slack in the barrel when you break it open well I called crosman and complained that I've had three of their rifles springs break on me one I tuned and two that were not and why should I have to pay shipping when all they where going to do is replace a $6 spring I can do that and more for the price of shipping and why should I order the same springs that I keep breaking from yall and there response was well the springs should not be breaking so I will order me some JM E3650 springs and some more small apex seals and get these cheap guns going again and will see how long they last after a good tune. The biggest problem I find on these guns is the amount of oil inside them it's not even grease it's some type od dark oil and it's all over everything and has to be the major cause of failure in these guns.

They are buildt to the specs that Crosman gives the factory....it wouldn't hurt to tell Crosman it's time to up the specs and get with the program, the factory can and does put out some good rifles and I'm hoping they continue to up grade but keep the cost down. If you have suggestions on what could be improved let me know via e-mail.

I do Luv my Sierra-Pro,....although this love affair was a bit shaky at the start. I agree about the 'oils' they use in these guns leading to their eventual failure,...and the springs/seals aren't much better either. I'm sure you'll be much happier with the Maccarri components installed. tjk
