Talon SS Barrel Swap .177 12" --> .22 24"
« on: January 30, 2009, 02:44:48 AM »
I have a Talon SS. I started with a .177 12" barrel. I wanted MORE POWER ( gunting like ugh ugh ugh).

I bought a package deal that included a talon (non-ss) shroud for an 18 inch barrel. sold off all, but the shroud, a hill pump, and some pellets.

I bought a used .22 24" barrel.

I swapped the barrels and installed the shroud. I had to cut one section of the baffles out of the shroud to fit the longer barrel, but it is still VERY quite.
here are some pictures.

Got to shot it tonight and get it sighted in. It is WAY more power than the .177 barrel. The target did not last. I will need a new target.

Hopefully soon I will get a chance to run it over my chrony.

You should be able to easily pull 40+ FPE with Kodiaks in that rig, I think I had mine tuned out to 44fpe once it was setup right and a real tack driver.  Nice looking group of shooters ya got there!

Nice job.  So that shroud was actually for an 18 inch barrel. When you changed barrels did you change the tophat setting or did you just leave the tophat alone to achieve the hier velocity?  I would like a longer barrel for my SS say 16 inches instead of 12.  I am not sure that an 18 would fit with my current set up.

The shroud was for an 18" barrel on a Talon. Since the Talon SS frame is about 5 inches longer, I was able to use the shroud and only had to remove about 1 inch of the internal baffles.

It is still VERY quite.

I just shot it over the chrony and all I heard was the hammer and pellet strike. It shot at between 850 and 810 in a decaying string of shots with Beeman Extra Heavy Kodiaks about 32 ft-lbs. I will do more testing and adjust the tophat and power wheel. The top hat is currently set at .100 and powerwheel at 2. This was a consistent 950 with beeman kodiak match pellets.

I keep forgetting that the SS has a longer frame. One thing about the Air Force rifles is you can experiment as much as you wish --good news and bad news.
