Gamo 890 Hunter Performance-Accuracy
« on: December 18, 2006, 05:57:07 AM »
Since I just purchased my first Gamo air rifle I was wondering if you could give me a little information about it. The rifle I bought is a Gamo 890 Hunter in .177 cal. with a BSA 3-12 50 mm scope, I got it from Cabela's and should have it in about a week.

I understand that this gun has been out for a few years so some of you who have one should have some experience with it. How is the accuracy once broken in, what kind of velocity should I expect and how does it perform overall compaired to simular Gamo break barrel rifles ?

I got it at a very good price on sale, I have noticed that the retail price is somewhat higher than the new Gamo guns with the same features, is there a reason for the price difference ?

I plan on using it for plinking and some hunting, I really wanted it in .22 cal. but for the price I will take the .177 version. Is there a chance I might be able to convert it to .22 cal. with a new barrel ?

Thanks Bill

7273,

If you are going to convert it to a 22 cal., you might as well spend the same money now and buy the 22 cal. Check the bargain gate! Best of luck...

It has the same internals as the older hunter series as well as the shadow series.  You can expect very good accuracy out of it.  The scope isn't all that bad either.  Look at it as a Shadow supreme with a wooden stock!

The other posters are correct, everything from the $124 Walmart Shadow 1000 to the 890 used the same powerplant, trigger and barrel, despite the tremendous difference in price.

With Crosman Premier 7.9gr (sometimes called CPL) - which is a good, all-round pellet that's not horribly expensive - a new one should do right around 910-920fps. After break-in, it could go a bit higher. Sometimes an oinker gets through that won't break out of the mid-upper 800's. But that tends to be a rarity.

Accuracy? Gamo claims about .4" CTC at 10 yards with their Match pellets - but frankly I don't think that Gamo Match pellets are that good. Using a single-point rest  and the open sights, I can usually do better than that with my Shadow or my 220 using CPL's, and I'm not a very good shot. I'm guessing that .2" CTC is within the gun's capabilities.

Some of you may be aware that I bought a used daisey .177 here a while back. It is made by Gamo in Spain. It shoots in the low 600 fps with superdomes and is very accurate at 30 yards. Wonder what the actual fps of the 890 is compared to my daisey springer..:)

If the internals actually are the same as the shadow, I can tell you that my s1k did/does 995fps with Beeman silver bears and pretty darn good with CPL's but she really loves the Beeman FTS. Since I installed the Rich/Mich guide kit w/tophat and the C Tuna GRT-III trigger. and my Simmons Pro-Air 6-18-40 AO, and bent my barrel  POI 3.5in.rt. AND 3.5in.up (@10yds.), and re-centered the crown . I now am shooting  3/8 in.c-c  at 10M, and am able to group 5shots at 45yds. on my best day c-c 5/8 to 6/8in. The frustrating thing is that every 5 shot group has three or sometimes 4 shots ALL touching each other at 25 and 45yds.and the other one or two goes out to the 1/2in. or 6/8in. circle. This gun CAN shoot Very accurate , but is not as consistant as it COULD be. I think it might benefit from a Rich/Mich choked Walther barrel.

I got my 890 from Cabelas a couple of days ago, cleaned it up and mounted the BSA 3-12 50mm scope on it. I first sighted it in at around 10 yds. then moved it back to 25 yds. and shoot some groups to see how it would do. I have to tell you this is one of the most accurate rifles I have shoot out of the box. I used two different pellets and both would group 5 shoots that you could cover with a dime time after time. I don't  have a chronograph so I don't know the FPS I was getting. In the next few days I'm going to try some groups at 50 yds. and see how it does, I don't see how a tune could improve this gun unless to smooth it out a little. I'm very pleased with the 890 to say the least.

If you are referring to the Daisy 131...(Gamo Expo 26) it is a nice light break barrel.

info here

http://www.topshot.gr/guns/airguns-p3.htm

about 625 fps.

Nice little gun..

Well, I just finished cleaning my new .177 890 and installing the scope.  She sure looks purdy :)

I'll wait 24 hors for the loc-tite to dry and cure  then I'll run the first batch of pellets through her.
I can't wait !!

Nothin prettier than a brand new rifle and scope cradled in the gun holder just waitin to be fired,, well maybe except for a squirrels head sittin in the middle of the crosshairs of that new scope.
