Thingy to read pellet scores
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:37:43 PM »
There is a little clear thing that you stick in a .177 hole and it has a magnifying glass attached to it to aid in the exact reading of where a pellet hit. What is this thing called and where can I get one?

Heck, Martin -- you are really getting to be a strident competitor.  I am not sure I want you to up those scores another point or two.  I am not sure what it is called.  Maybe you could just stick a pellet in the hole and eyeball it.  The best thing, though, is to just stop using the Gamo targets or printed paper targets and start buying the official 10-meter Edelmann targets.  They punch very nice, crisp holes that are straightforward to score.  Pilkingtons has them and they are no more expensive than the Gamo targets. ($50 per 1000 vs $5 per 100). If you buy the 5-bull 10 meter targets, you get 5,000 10-meter bulls, or 5 times as many 10 meter targets to shoot as with a single bull Gamo.  Both are the same size and fit the standard pellet traps.  But if you do find one of those scoring "thingys", send me one, also.  I am already having trouble keeping up with you!  LOL

They are called thingy's to read pellet scores. They are called scoring guages and the one you are asking about is a plug.  In addition to the sources TCups listed you can get them from champ choice and I'd bet pilkington would also have them, maybe even centershot.

Searched both Pilks anc Champ's Choice and couldn't find em.  Maybe give em a call.

As a matter of fact, since Champion's Choice has re-done their web site, I find it difficult to shop for a lot of the things I used to browse for on their web site.  And the search function is a tiny little click on that just says 'search' way up in the top right corner.  Pilkington's has never been that easy to browse.  I have the feeling that both on line vendors are now reducing the number of items in their on site inventory and doing "POR" from their wholesalers.  The price of the dollar is fluctuating and availability isn't what it used to be.

I talked with them on the phone and got an email from them as well and they are having problems with their new web pages.  Their ammo comes up as being out of stock when in fact they are not out of any brand of ammo.  I hate the new champ choice web site and I suspect it will be some time before they get the bugs worked out.  You'll just have to make your orders over the phone.

Their new web site is terrible, but they're great to deal with by phone.  They also have a very nice catalog, and the 2009 should be out soon.  So if someone needs something specific, let me know, I can give you part numbers and price.  Later.

So did I break some unspoken rule here?  I see the two sites I found and referenced, with the pel gauge in stock, have been deleted from the post, apparently in favor of the ChampChoice search result site, which, BTW, comes up empty again for "scoring gauge".  OK.  And I see Charlotte's response to my first posts, referencing two other sites with the item in question in stock -- Charlotte posts "in addition to the sources TCups listed . . ." , seemingly confirming that my post for the sources I listed must have been there at least transiently and then have been edited and removed.  Hmmm.

Someone needs to send me a PM and tell me what is going on and why, please.  Otherwise, please don't edit/delete my posts for no apparent reason.  It's not polite.  Thanks.

Again, if you strike out at ChampChoice (good folks, bad web site), try championshooters.com  in Albany, OH

Eagle Eye Scoring Gauge,  SKU: EE-22, $18.95.  Or if you have time during your work day, call Champion's Choice and ask -- but there search engine doesn't find the product or anything like it for me.

Sincerely, etc.

TCups, I'm not sure what happened.  I tried replying to your post and my post came up with your name on it so in the confusion I deleted MY post with your name on it and reposted mine.  Somehow that must have deleted your post as well.  I'm just guessing.  I don't know how my posting originally had your name to the left but it did.  I didn't check to see if anything else was changed but I don't think I would have recognized anything if I had.

No worries, Charlotte.  I just couldn't figure out why my post was deleted or by whom.  Seemed odd.  Thanks for the explanation.

Since I am not yet a member who has shot in one of the matches, I am reluctant to jump in here.

But not being shy,  I will anyway:  The scoring guages are generaly called "plugs," and come in all the verious calibers.

Well," back in the day" I weathered the trials of  a son and a daughter who participated in many many NRA sanctioned official matches, both small bore (.22) and air rifle. I was called in many times to help with scoring these matches, and believe me it is NOT easy.

Nowadays, the NRA rules require That plugs ONLY be used by match officials (it is fairly easy to "fudge" a close shot).

But even in the fun matches (like here among friends) But for close shots, a plug is REALLY a necessity! There is really no other good way of determining if a shot actuall "touches" a target ring or not.  And folks, using a pellet (or a .22 bullet for small bore) to "guage" the shotcan be done if a plug is not available.  But it is NOT as good as the use of a plug. Fingers get in the way of seeing the hole!

If you don't have a plug of the correct size, at least get a "Magnifier."  These handy gadgets reall will help.

There is a very useful site that is  oriented to pistol shooting (Greater Boston Pistol League) target scoring information, but the basic information is applicable to any that participate in these matches.  It is a great help in "learning" how to score.

Here it is:     http://www.gbpl.org/pdfs/GBPL_scoring.pdf

I am considering joining the "fun" here, so thought I would throw this out for the consideration of all.
