Hello to all,
I just got a new CFX, a big uprgrade for me from the Daisy 990. Now I can actually hit what I'm shooting at. I just scoped it with a 3-9x32 Leaper's and sighted it in today. Only 300 rounds through the gun, and I was gonna wait until later to smooth it out a bit before the scope but it shoots pretty smooth. Put 50 rounds through it at the range with no scope stop... no problem. Sighted it in and went for my first CFX hunt in the woods. I could shoot 1 or 2 a day at my house as they are not too wary , but the woods is a real challenge.
I saw a couple bushy tails dancing around the base of a tree about 60 yards out and slowly made my way over there, trying to use cover to close the distance. As I got closer, I think they saw me and went over the hill they were on. I moved to a bush and settled in with light camo on. I could see one or two more over the next 20 minutes but always 60-80 yards and moving. I waited and watched.
After another 30 minutes here comes a mid sized grey over the hill and heading towards a big tree. He does not see me half behind a bush and tree and I ease the gun up to be ready if he offers a shot. All I can see is his tail and right shoulder! It's about 40 yards from my guess and the AO scope says similiar. My sights are zero just below 40 with this pellet so I am feeling good.
He finally goes up the tree and then comes down on my side... I am hoping he'll stop like they do and about 15' above the ground he stops. I am looking at him as if I were directly above him, ie. from the "top" and he is facing straight down and stretched out. His head looks too small and I decide on a body shot while I brace my left hand against a tree and rest the gun on it. I want to pull the trigger but the sights are wandering and it takes a second to get them to slow up. As the sight passes upwards over his head and in between his shoulders I squeeze the last bit of pull on the (stock) trigger. It feels like a good shot and I see him jump through the scope as the .177 Predator goes home.
He holds onto the tree for a second or two with his back left leg and then falls. He does not move or twitch. When I arrive I can't find any holes or blood. Finally I locate the hole about exactly where I aimed! It's on his back just behind the neck and in between his shoulders, a clean small round hole. I figure no blood because he was dead double-quick.
Wow, I am amazed at the accuracy of this gun and that predator is doing about 900 fps from it already. I walk off the distance to 37 yards... I can't believe it. I once missed a squirrel sitting up looking at me from 15 yards with my D990, it was just a lousy shooter, very old one. This is a sweet rifle.
Best Regards,
John
