Poor kid
« on: March 04, 2009, 11:42:44 AM »
Has anyone read the story about the kid from Orange County. They reported that a bb ricocheted, hit him in the head. He was just pronounced brain dead.

That sounds fishy.  A Daisy BB gun does not have the power to do that.  Even fired from a shotgun, a BB pellet lacks sufficient mass to do much damage to the skull.  There's got to be more to this story.

now a pellet, firing out of a .22 cal at 800+ fps or a .177 cal at 1000 ish fps,  both of which at extremely close ranges (less than 10 yards) would certainly do the trick, but i doubt a lead pellet *recoiled* with enough force to do that...  suicidal teen with a pellet rifle?  sounds fishy.

The whole story seems strange. Looked for him but did not find him till after dark? After they found the gun? Wouldn't have been next to him if a richochet hit him? Bet there is more to the story. John

i agree...a daisy bb gun(unless maybe the 880?) couldn't do enough damage to the kid...hell, even the 880 is nowhere near the said velocity...a few hunderd feet per sec. less actually...

This is a very unfortunate thing for the family, I feel sad for them.  I do however feel there has to be  more to this story. I agree something seems fishy,it could also be the reporter!

There is definitely something missing in the story. I didn't notice the article saying anything about a ricochet. Even if it was a ricochet it's very unlikely to catch it in the temple. From what information has been presented to me, I gather that if in fact the cause of death was from a BB lodged in his temple then it was self inflicted. Tragic story.

This is indeed tragic,

But there are some questions that come to mind. Like how he made it to the bushes and why ? And could this have been caused by some natural condition like an aneurysm or defective heart, or caused in conjunction of the bb and an existing condition ?

No matter what turns out to be the cause, this is tragic occurrence. My Prayers go out for the boy and his family !

Like many here, I find this some what suspicious, or at least questionable, certainly very unfortunate :-(

When I first read it.....it says the bb ricocheted....wouldn`t the bb strike him in the frontal area of the head and not the side or temple?  And if the kid was missing....wouldn`t the family search the backyard and surrounding areas before heading in all points of the compass?  Doesn`t make sense.

Doesn't matter if it hit him in the ass.  A deflected BB would shed a lot of energy in ricocheting.  Even one fired point blank would have a hard time inflicting a mortal wound.  It would have had to clip a vein in the temple resulting in death from blood loss, but that would be rare, in itself.  Wounds like that clot, especially in a youngster who's healthy.  Just more tripe by a reporter who doesn't know his/her stuff and a police chief out to make use of it for his own ends.

I feel for the kid but I blame the parents whenever an irresposible accidental tragedy strikes a kid,,,it's like the 18 yr old who gets his drivers license & because he/she graduates H.S.the parents by them a Corvette & two weeks later wondering why their child was wrapped around a tree lying dead in whatever was left of the car!!!!!!!   I may be over dramatic but I seen it happen too many times,,,,close to home!!!!!!  The same father that took his son to the bar to have a quick drink but tells his son not to drink!!!!!!!!! This incedent will not go unnoticed & play a big part in why airguns will eventually be considered FIREARMS across the nation!!!!!!!  Thank God for our Government!!!!! :0
