computer fun
« on: January 02, 2007, 03:57:04 PM »
A few months ago I installed "KUBUNTU" linux.  am no stranger to linux, been using it since the advent of windows xp.   this one was nice.....but some thing seemed not right with the firefox browser which I upgraded.  last night I removed firefox, and all the folders.  I did put a copy of my bookmarks on the desk top.  I reinstalled firefox 2.0.   wow this is the best working broser I ever seen.  I can't imagine what would be better.  If windows had worked just a fraction this good I would still be using microsoft.     previously I was using MEPIS, also a DEBIAN LINUX clone.  You will have to excuse me but I just had to tell some one!  John

(firefox is a tabbed browser with a bookmark tool bar and all my bookmarks in 25 folders across the toolbar at the top.  talk about the ultimate convenience)

How did it do with finding drivers for all your hardware? I know some of the Linux distributions are getting good and detecting everything.

mepis and kubuntu loaded with no problems and every thing worked.  I have ubuntu on my laptop because mepis did not have any wireless that worked or that I could getting working.  kubuntu is supposed to be same as ubuntu with a kde desktop.  all mentioned come on a downloadable live cd so you can check to see that they work before installing.  i don't do terminal windows well or comand line.   have a amd xp1600 msi mboard, 768 mem., running on a removable harddrive in a plug-in caddy so I can swap the os in seconds.  john   (and I have no microsoft in my home peroid.)

So, John, what do you use for programs, is it compatible with Windows programs?  I switched to Firefox and Thunderbird (email) a couple of years ago, wouldn't mind losing XP but all my software runs on it.  TIA.
