Big Cat with air venturi piston
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:28:59 AM »
Hello all,

I am new to this sport own a Big Cat that I love, and would like to mod.

I was wondering what would it take/replace using a air venturi piston and not a spring.

Can someone list out the advantages along with disadvantages for me?

TIA,

Pat

Check out the video by Paul Capello on the Pyramid Air sight. He did one on the gas ram. I believe if you wanted to go that route a Theoben gas ram would be a better way to go.David Slade of airgunwerks can do that for you.

The Theoben gas rams will only fit the Gamo Hunter 440.  The Air Venturi rams will fit some Gamo's but aren't as highly regarded.  I've got the Theoben in my BSA SuperSport and I must say it is a treat to shoot!  Gives me a chance to shoot heavier pellets!

I saw that Pyramid sells the Big Cat with the venturi piston, so thought I would ask.

Maybe I am just lucky, but the air venturi .177 Whisper I got from PA is a great shooter. I wouldn't part with it. I did add "THE" trigger to it to put it over the top. Good luck with your decision!!!!!!

Ok, so now I am left to assume, please anyone let me know if I am assuming wrong.

1) Gas ram will get rid of the awful "twang" that I have right now.
2) Would not need/use spring guides.
3) Would not need to use Heavy or Velocity tar (for spring)
4) Does not use traditional seal, no more worries about if pellet is too light or heavy (would still need to watch pellet weight for accuracy)

I had mine installed by PA. All I can say is the "guts " of the rifle are replaced by the air venturi cyninder. I do not have any "twang " with the Whisper as I do with my S/Shadow 1K. I've been assured it is maintenance free(of course until it breaks like every thing does eventually). It shoots smooth and I can target practice in 20 degree weather with no problem, other than not feeling the pellets to load after a while. I like pneumatics in cylinder form , they can do a lot of work. Good Luck!

That was going to be another question, how easy is it to install, some people say a tune is easy, if you can do drum breaks, and have the tools ie spring compressor amound other tools.

I said that! Of course, you have to do your research and get a schematic for your application. PA in the past would not sell it alone, had to be installed by them. This may have changed. I cannot see how removing multiple parts and replacing with one can be too difficult if you have done a few teardown and rebuilds in the past. If not, I would let someone who has do this.
I came into this world with nothing, and I still have most of it left!
