New Condor on CO2, .177
« on: March 07, 2009, 02:49:22 AM »
As posted elsewhere, it came in yesterday.  Shoots like a dream.  I'm using 7.9 gr CPHPs and am more than satisfied with the way it puts holes in paper.  I've put most of a 500 count tin of pellets through it and the CO2 seems to be doing fine.

I am NOT very satisfied with the temps outside, today!  It's just below freezing.  Brrrr.  To keep the tank warm I used 3 hand warmer packs and wrapped it with two heavy wool socks.  When I came back in it seemed to be about the same temp (to the touch) as when I went out.

I tried to get a chrony string and couldn't.  I got an Err2 on the first shot and an Err1 on the second.  Not sure what that means.  It's a pretty cloudy morning; perhaps the sky is too dark?  Anyway, I'll try again later.

When I put the stock on last evening I had to move the scope back a bit so I needed to resight.  I resighted at 35 instead of 25 yards because hitting my flip up targets at 25 was too easy--standing with a bipod.  The rifle is GREAT!

I'll keep trying for a chrony string and get it posted when I can.  NOTE:  I ONLY took the chrony out this morning because Marvin is such a task master and keeps wanting a string!  ;>)

Thanks for giving it a try any way but wait till things are right . You know I have a pair of wool electric battery operated shocks that I will not part with . I mention it because they sure would keep a tank warm . And the striker weight is a added weight between the striker and the spring on the Condor . Marvin

OK, got the string.  Ran one with the power wheel at 0, one with it maxed.  As expected, didn't see much (any?) difference.  Outside temp was low 30's, 7l9 gr CPHPs.

PW on zero
704  (probably high because everything was warm from being inside)
676
674
675
671
673
670
666
668
662

PW maxed

660
657
655
656
660
658

655
663
658

I continued shooting for another 40 or 50 rounds and it hung right in there at about 660.  A little low, but then it's pretty cold outside.

I've thought about the electric socks.  Might give that a try.  I'd rather it'd just warm up outside!  ;>)

If your getting 60 - 70 shots that consistent for close work at that low of temperature its not bad . Let us know how it goes with more testing . Are you going to use air as well ? Marvin

I haven't decided if I'll go with air someday, or not.  Have to get the bottle and scuba adapter.  I have some scuba tanks--just need to get them hydro'd.

I got the Condor mostly to get used to shooting again so I can go deer hunting in the fall.  Been many, many, years since I've shot a rifle much.  (And it shows.  Sigh.).  I'll also use it for squirrel hunting as an excuse to get out and about before deer season.

I think it has plenty of snort on CO2 for squirrels out to 35 yards, just as it it.  Maybe warm the tank a little bit more to get a little more power.  If it'll do what I want on CO2--and it appears that it will--then I doubt I'll bother with HPA until/unless I have a need for more power.

As soon as I get a chance to shoot a decent target group I'll post it.  Weather permitting, maybe this afternoon.  But we're expecting 1 - 3 inches of snow and falling temps which means wind so I'm not too hopeful.  And temps dropping to 11 for a high by Weds so I'm guessing if I don't get it done today it'll be next weekend.

I shot these this morning.  CPHPs, 7.9 gm.  25 yards.  Outside with a bit of a gusty breeze.  I shot 8 targets, probably about 100 rounds total.  These are the best two.  I think the wind was playing havoc with most of the rest.  At least, I like to blame the wind 'cause otherwise I'd have to blame me!

That's some fine shootin....   I"m getting ready to set my 18 inch Talon .22 up for CO2,,, just have to buy a tank.  Gonna use it as my summer bird gun.  I was thinking of getting a .177 barrel, but funds are a bit short right now so I think I'm gonna just go with the .22 barrel I have now,,,, I'm hoping the FPS will be sufficient for whacking starlings out to 35 yards......

Your groups are making me anxious to get my CO2 tank so I can start shooting.
