Ed, what paints do you use?
« on: March 08, 2009, 03:37:38 PM »
Been thinking that the stock on the Milbro G46 I'm slowly working on has lots of wear and tear from years of abuse.  Might not come back well with simple staining, especially being a pretty bland piece of beech.  There were some painted Diana 34's that were out a few years ago and, to my eye, they really didn't look bad.  So I wondered how the G46 might look painted?  Not camo but maybe a royal blue or another solid color perhaps  with Union Jack on the butt.  (Or thistle - they were made in Scotland.)   What would be a good paint?  Oil?  I'm thinking latex would book too much for an application like that.  Don't have a sprayer, either, if that matters.

Thanks in advance, paint meister!

The key to wear and tear is in what you topcoat it with. Any name brand automotive grade clear can be placed over 98% of a properly dried base paint and will provide protection from the elements as well as U/V fade. And you can get flatners to tone down the sheen, in case you don't want it so high gloss allowing you to go from a pure hi-shine to a pure flat, or anything in between. Holds up far better than MinWax polyurethane.

I came into this world with nothing, and I still have most of it left!

I guess those require a spray gun.  Have to think what I might use, instead.  Polyshades are kind of purty but not, to my eye, on a gun stock.
