New 350 a little confused with "power"

I just got my new 350 from Midsouth and it is a nice rifle. I shot it a little to get a quick feel for it and it is dieseling heavily. That's ok though, should go away. What is confusing me is that with all this "power" it will not penetrate a mere 15 pages of a Brownells catalog. I was doing the phone book penetration test but with the Brownells instead. 15 pages?? What happened? I used a crow mag, predator,hobby (which didn't clear 6 pages) cp, penetrater, all with more or less the same results. The CP was the penetration king by the way. Was it the catalog? Its got me baffled, though the pellets were very distorted some even completely flattened, why the lack of penetration? Even in a piece of 2x4 its seemed lacking in penetration. I'll crony to see if the rifle is ok but I think it is. Just wondering if anyone had ever had that type of thing happen in "testing". Thanks for any insight.

Something definitely doesn't sound right.  My .22 350 will punch through a 1" pine board at 10 yards easy, and it'll go through 3/4" particle board at 20 yards.  I agree with ed, chrony testing is in order.  For comparison, of the pellets you listed, I've shot Predators and Crow Mags in my rifle, Preds do just over 800 fps and Crow Mags do 770.  Both are a tight fit in my breech.  Good luck, and keep us posted.

Just finished up with the chrony and the results speak for themselves. Something is definitely wrong. Here are the numbers, this is the 22 cal.

One thing I did notice was the breech seal was below the face of the breech thereby allowing air to blow by....I think. The seal is definitely below the steel though. I have a RWS 36 that I chronied to make sure the chrony was ok and it was...CpHp's at 930's, normal for that rifle. How could I have gotten a dud right from the get go? Just my rotten luck I guess. I bought it from Midsouth and I'm not sure they will do a switch. I may have to send it to RWS to fix already. Anyone ever deal with Midsouth? What's they're policy on something like that?? Thanks for the input.

I purchased a BP hand gun from Midsouth and didn't like the way it looked, exchanged it for another one with no problems. I didn't like the second one ether so I sent it back for a refund. I think you will find that Midsouth will do everything they can to make you happy.

I have had a 350 .22 from MS for about a month now and it is fine. My crony readings range from 688 with the Beeman Kodiak 21.1 to 968 with the RWS Hobby 11.9.  My overall average is 850. So there is something wrong when your rifle don't even reach the average that I obtain.. I notice that the pellet flight is pretty flat for a long distance. Might not be shooting 1000 but it is very powerful. I will have to try the book test... FN

I'm not FN, but I have a scope on mine.  BTW, I got my 350 from Midsouth too.  Actually, I've had 2 scopes on my rifle so far.  I originally bought a Simmons 44 Mag 6.5-20x44 AO and BKL 260 mount for it.  Had some clearance issues with the BKL, ended up using a Beeman 5039 adjustable.  Although good optics and smooth operation of all controls, I just didn't like the scope much, at least not on this rifle.  Eye releif was just a little too tight for me.  So the Simmons moved to my CFX, and the Leapers 3-12x44 AO full size moved to the 350.  It's in Accushot 1pc. high mount, with the stop pin hanging over the front of the scope rail.  I also decided to shim the rear of the scope, 3 strips of film negative got me close.  I've put maybe 100 pellets through it with this set up, so far so good.  I find the Leapers scope works much better for me, more forgiving in eye releif, brighter, and much finer reticle.  Both are mil dot, BTW, but the Simmons cross hairs and dots are huge compared to the Leapers.  Maybe it's the 30 mm tube, but these are outstanding scopes for the money.

On your gun, try laying a tissue over the breech and firing it.  If it's leaking, you'll know.  I just looked at mine, it definitely sits proud of the breech face.  Does it cock smooth and easy?  Although much easier to cock than the other magnum springers, it's still a lot more effort than my CFX.  Might also be a busted main spring.  HTH and good luck.

I have a BSA 4X32 AO with a Gamo non-adjustable one piece mount. Unusal in that my 350 does  not droop, at least it is not noticable.  Only thing this rifle reaches out so far  I need to change to a  scope with zoom. But can't do that right away. The scope setup I have is holding up fine..  FN

I might add that Midsouth is one of the Good Guys when it comes to service. I have bought a couple guns and other pieces from them and have had excellent service from them..

i ALSO GOT A 350 IN  177 FROM  ONTARGET GUNS HERE IN MICH, AND IT SHOT IN THE 880'S ,I WAS NOT IMPRESSED SO I RETURNED IT A MONTH LATER FOR A HARD HITTING 48  IN A 22 NOW I'M LOVIN-IT  WHAT EVER IT TOUCHES IT CRUSHES PLAIN AND SIMPLE

I found out what the problem with my 350 was....the breech seal pocket was machined to deep. I called Midsouth and they will not take the 350 back no matter what. I have to send it to Umarex for repair, do you believe that? Brand new and already going in for repair. At least Art, the guy from Umarex, was nice and tried to help out. He sent me two washers and a new seal but it was still no good. I decided to do a little Mickey Mouse 101 to it and got it going. It was shooting hobbies between 912 and 930. I also tried a couple of crow mags....770 and 740. The spread seems a little wide but the seal is still not right. Soooo off to Umarex, already, for a new barrel and breech assembly. What a bummer. Hope they don't screw it up. At least it seemed like it wanted to shoot good anyway. We will see I guess.

Wow man, I'm really sorry to hear that.

I'd of thought MidSouth would have stepped up on that one.

Still, if Umarex can do the job in a timely manner and fix it for you properly you'll be stylin' soon.

I think [from looking at independent sites] the 350 advertised stats are a bit inflated.  Still it is a quality rifle.

Just as a last resort before you send it in, have you tried smearing a little bit of rubber cement or some hardening plastic glue or gasket material on the bottom of the seal and let it dry on dry-lubed glass?

I've done this for other applications, and it can work. The trick is to keepthe thicknesseven, which wasn't that hard when it's only a thin layer.

You might be able to do it in two steps, putting down some as close as you can, a do a second correction layer

Alternatively, someadhesive plastic or rubbersheet might work.
