Turning a Shadow 1000 into an informal target rifle
« on: March 09, 2009, 04:44:19 PM »
I have a Shadow 1000, stock except for a GRT-III trigger.  I'd like to use it for informal target shooting (paper targets at 20 yards).  I have no need for hunting power.  I would like the gun to be quieter and have less recoil and twang.  If the velocity drops to 400-500 fps to achieve this, fine by me.  I don't particularly like the two-way recoil of this rifle either, but I guess that's the way springers are.  It just seems to jump all over the place making follow thru next to impossible for me.  I can't keep it pointing anywhere near on target after pulling the trigger.

Is it possible to do any home-modifications (maybe a lighter spring?) to achieve the above goals?  I'm not interested in a professional tune at the moment, I just don't like the gun enough to put that kind of money into it (with a tune I'd probably like the gun better, but I need to conserve money).  The alternate I'm considering is just to go out and buy a new Daisy 953 ($65 at PA with coupon).

Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

If you did a basic home lube tune it should remove most of that twang and vibration and make the rifle much nicer to shoot.  Check out the information in the "Library" section having to do with tunes,,,, also do a search of posts having to do with tunes.  You should be able to find enough info to do a basic lube tune.  Very important though.....................make sure you have a spring compressor before attempting to remove the guns internals.......

While you have it open for the lube tune, you could try removing the spring seat from the spring guide rod.  This will decrease the preload on the spring, that'll drop the power and should make it shoot a bit softer.  Shrink wrapping the spring guide can also help, as well as trying it with and without the top hat.  Good luck.

Getting one of them UK standard (12ft/lbs) mainsprings would also tune it down nicely.
If some is good and more is better - then too much is just right.
