Shadow 1000 vs Diana 34
« on: March 16, 2009, 11:51:48 PM »
Just wondering if the Shadow 1000 is roughly the equivalent of a Diana 34 (or one of its clones)?  This would be for stock power and accuracy.  Or even both guns tuned?  The two Shadows I have owned seem to be about the same quality as a 34.

Out of the box, the Diana will have a much better trigger, and probably be a bit smoother.  Both will benefit from a tune, with the Diana needing a lube tune almost immediately, Dianawerks tends to send them out nearly dry.  A tune on a Gamo will have a more dramatic impact on shootability, but both guns would end up very similar otherwise.  Because I don't like the TO 5 trigger on the Diana's, I'd go with the Shadow and a GRT III trigger, but that's just me.  Later.

I tend to agree with Dave with exception to the TO trigger. They are better than most and can be worked on to get a sharper break.  Personally I would take a well tuned S1K over a well tuned  RWS 34 any day. Although the pawer plant on the RWS 34 in my opinion is a much better design. But there is so much more you can do with a Gamo when it comes to internal tuning.

I've just purchased Gene's Turbo-tuned Shadow 1000 and it's got a GRTIII on it.  Haven't seen it yet.  It's still on the pack mule heading west!

I'll let you know how it goes once it shows up!  By the sounds of it Gene's got that bugger shooting 930+.

I actually own both, and the diana 34 has only a better trigger from factory. the gamo actually is quieter, but twangy. it is also lighter, and easier to cock. i am able to shoot the shadow more accurately than the 34, but the 34 is a howitzer. generally, when out hunting my arm reaches first for the shadow than the RWS. But if i am benched and comfy shooting targets, the RWS is the airgun of choice. Is a question of feel. Both are .177s and both scoped similarly. my .02 $

To me, choosing between these two rifles is like comparing apples to oranges. My pick,....the 34 hands down. The Shadow is more or less a glorified Big-Cat with more frills. I've owned both,...both tuned, and I'd pick the 34 over the Gamo without a seconds hesitation. The  34 is a heavier rifle,...I've got the wood model, and is a tad barrel heavy. But the superior craftsmnship of the Diana is way ahead of any Shadow series Gamo. The gamo is lighter, and easier to shoulder, with great accuracy off-hand,....which is how I shoot 90% of the time. But alot louder as well. If I had my drothers,...I'd still pick the 34. If I had one single critique of the Diana's,...it would be the trigger. Not the same confident pull as a rifle that will accept the GRT-III trig, but that can be over come with practice and diligence!!! That's my dime in the well!!!! LOL's  tjk

my 2cents............

i too own both of them, and as forwhat already has been said of the stock triggers, the 34 is better, but the shadow does have a better cocking linkage system.  both are just about equal in performance when tuned. not much to tune on the 34 can't think of nothing else besides a hone and a lube job.

the 34 is expensive to fix compared to the shadow. all i have ever replaced in the shadow are a few broken springs and worn out seals. the 34, this thing costed me half of the gun's worth itself.
the three bearings in the trigger assembly kept falling out so a new one had to be had ($100.00). next the spring guide broke ($5), then the safty mechanism broke ($10), then the spring broke ($20), and now the stock is starting to become loose after each use ($?). the 34 is 5yrs old compared to the shadow wich is about 3yrs old. still...............i'm not clowning on the 34 though, i actually like shooting it better than the shadow.
