Well PCP Shooters, How Does 30 yards sound ?
« on: March 23, 2009, 06:35:45 PM »

We currently have 6 members interested in these matches, but two of our members have only 32 and 35 yards to shoot.

Smaller targets can be used, creating all the challenge that anyone can stand ! LOL

Lets set up some guidelines, Spring is HERE !

Bill:

Either 25 or 30 yards sounds good. 30 meters may be a bit tight for me, but might be able to do it. Currently, if someone wants to compete standing, off-hand, there are two other matches going, so I suggest this competition be shot from the seated position, rifle shouldered, and a front rest only (tripod, table, front bench rest w/ no rear bag).  At 30 yards, with PCP's  and competitors capable of shooting ragged single-hole groups, scoring may get tricky.  Why don't we use the "Steroid Match" target w/ 15 bulls and shoot a single shot at each?  This offers a heads up comparison of accuracy at 30 yards seated/front rest with 10 meters, SOH, if folks want to shoot both matches.

Holy sh!t!! The 'Steroid'15 at 25 or 30m! I have trouble hitting that at ten. But I'll give it a go if we can have the front supported! When you say supported, you are talking about single point support as in a fulcrum not as in a flat surface like a large book I take it? Well you guys certainly know how to make me work for my points! Lets give it a go and see what happens! How about start at 25m and if the scores are tight, push the target back to the 30m mark or what ever is the longest distance we can all compete at! I don't mind coming last as long as I feel I'm improving!!LOL!!

This is a GREAT Beginning !

Let's ALL get together, and see if we can agree on this format. Also selecting a time limit on the shooting of this match. (Although it's just for FUN, and unenforceable, wait a minute, I'll blow a whistle for the start and stop of competition :-) )

So let's see if we can get this baby rolling !

No restriction on a front "rest" in my mind.  Rest it on whatever you want, but don't clamp it in a gun vise, and I guess, don't shoot off a bipod or other device permanently attached to the rifle.

I generally shoot off a photo tripod with a small leather bag attached as a forearm rest, or off my bench with a small front tripod rest and no rear bag.  Gene shoots off a table with rest made of PVC pipe covered with insulating foam.  Again, the rifle is shouldered and the rear stock isn't immobilized in a bunny bag or gun vise.

Heck, I don't know -- what do others think?

I`m game.....at 30 yards or meters...I`ll definately need to have the air rifle supported at the front....and I`ll use a PCP!!!!!  Steriod15 target sounds good.  It`ll be hard but a challenge...

Right then, game on! 'Steroid'15 target at (can we all manage ) 30meters. Same rules apply as the general offhand but you can use a front support which is not fixed to the rifle! The rifle must be shouldered but you can do it sitting down if you want! 15 mins max! Shooter scores own card and must be posted be Sunday midnight! Hows that for spur of the moment stuff!! If you want, I will do the same graph and table as I do for the 'offhand 'Steroid'15 so we can see our progress!

I gave it a go with my TX200 and 32 power and the Gamo target we have been using off of my single support bench at 30yrds. Sorry guys I can't get 30M since I planted my garden right in between me and the furthest spot in my yard. As you can see I have to shoot between plants and this is the best available spot.

10 shots

I might run out there and try the Steroid target while I got daylight. If it's OK with you guys I'd like to enter my score early because I'll be out of town/country for a week or so on Vacation???

OK I ran out there and shot the Steroid at 30yrds. Whooo. Man, you talk about trying to stay focused!!!!

I think this is probably the best I can do with this gun. Hardly a breeze, lot's of light. Hard to find better shooting conditions for outdoors.

Anyhow;
The target

The score

At least it will give you PCP guys something to laugh at!!

Are you kidding ronbeaux.....those are fantastic scores!!!!!  I haven't shot over 10 meters for over 5 months......None of my airguns are sighted in for that distance.  I'll have to sight-in, practice and then do the 30 Meter PCP match......

I forgot to check in here until I saw the post in the general section a few minutes ago. I wish I had checked in, I could have shot this one today.

Question on the Bipod rule - "not permanently attached to the rifle". While not permanently attached, I assume the bipod in the following picture is what the rule is meaaning to disallow.

If so, that's fine, I'll pull it off and use my bag. But my expeirience has been that a rest like the bag-on-camera tripod shown above is a far superior and more stable support, it's simply not as portable.

I always beat myself up when I know I used to do better. Sad fact is, the Cajun Spring Nationals are coming up and the last time I competed was 10 years ago, AFTER shooting over 10,000 pellets leading up to that and other matches. I've only shot around a thousand or so in the last few months and that just won't cut it. I'm real happy with my score but if you can't hold a 1/2 group at 30 yards you might as well stay home. Heck even 40 yards for that matter. And that's in a field target position, not off a bench!!!! There is just no way to compete with the guys now days in FT matches if you don't have a PCP that is custom made. Yes there are still plenty of springer shooters, but they have to compete with each other and have no chance of winning overall.

I suck now days and have lost my edge.

The good part is I get to play every day when the weather is right and still have fun! Now you guys sight in your PCPs and give an old Champ a run for his money. It's all good!

If I can do it with a springer you guys should be able to smear me with a decent PCP.

From experience though. You better be on your 'A' game cause this was a zone shoot for me and ain't too shabby. It's coming back, but it sure is slow in doing so.........

G2H, I sighted in at 20 yards shooting 815fps which told me that I would be just about 1/16" from dead zero at 30 for this match. Shooting 7.9 CP's using a Burris 8x32 scope set to 32 power. I plan on shooting the Cajun Spring Nationals in the Open Spring Gun Class but do not intend to use 'clicks' on the scope. I'm going to hold over-under instead. Reason is, I haven't got the room to set targets at 2 yrd intervals like back in the day so I can fine tune the clicks. I'll use the ballistic tables instead and hope for the best.

Can you tell I'm nervous?? I don't want't to show up and make a complete fool of myself.

IF can get to the range this weekend, IF the weather clears up and is decent (we're suppose to get 8-16 in of snow tomorrow), I'm in! I can only shoot 25 yds as the range has only 25 and 50 yd. If not this weekend then I have to wait till the weekend of the 11th of April to go back to the range. I'll shoot it eventually.
