What Chinese or other pump or springer to buy for $236?
« on: March 28, 2009, 12:51:43 PM »
I just sent my "Demo" rws 48 back due to problems posted here on another thread.  I get $236 back.  I want a 22 Hunting rifle or pistol.  I really want to buy one that will be a family heirloom.  I'm thinking Tech Force 89 and get tuned.  or RWS 34 ... Any suggestions?  Anyone got such a beast for sale?  Thanks

I hate to differ with you Mike but the TF-89 is a sweet shooter and much more powerful rifle than the RWS 34. I own the TF-89 and it tunes out fantastic and also is very accurate out past 30 yards. Plus the overall price difference in a new RWS 34 .22 freshly tuned is more than a TF-89 .22 freshly tuned..:)

TF-89 = $152.00 when not on sale. It comes with checkering both forstock and pistol grip.

I own both in .22 cal.....

My TF-89 is much more powerful than my 34 without a doubt.  Matter of fact I'm always amazed at the power my 89 has.  My 89 isn't tuned and in my case it took me awhile to finally find the pellet and hold that gave me the accuracy that I needed with the 89 to hunt effectively, but once I did me and the rifle "clicked".

As for my 34 ,,,,,, While it is less powerful than my 89  it still has more than enough power to make it a very effective hunting rifle.  My 34 quickly became my favorite small game springer taking a mess of squirrels with single shots out to 40 yards.

As much as I like my 89 I'd have to say if I could only buy one I'd go for the 34.  I found the 34 easier to shoot accurately "outa the box", I felt the overall quality of the 34 was better and it really wasn't picky about pellets.

I"m not knocking the 89, I love mine, but I'd go with the 34.

Well I have to admit that I find Chinese air guns to be quite nice after a bit of TLC..:) Actually the RWS 34 and TF-89 are in different leagues. Jeff has a point though. I would rather shoot my B-20 or B-26 rather than my RWS 34..:)

There is also a part of me that likes the 392.  It's American made (I think), its a pumper so I can vary speed.  I can get it tuned up by Mac1 or someone.  It's small in size compared to other rifles, and its brass (I guess brass is cool).  I love the way the silver streak looks but I want a 22. I'm supprized no one mentioned that.  Hmmmm.  34? 89?  What about the TF 99?  I like the idea of fixed barrell and under cocking.

if you want a pump up 22 go withe either the daisy 22 sg, or the Benjamin 392. Both great guns that will last for years if you treat them right.

I also have examples of all the guns mentioned. If you have no issues with pumping the Mac 1 Benji is a very good choice and easy to sell if you latter  decide to get rid of it for any reason. The regular 392 or Sheridan is not quite as powerful as the 34, but is plenty good enough for most small game. Add the peep sight to either one for best results. My 34 is a .22 and is very nice and is light years ahead of any Chinese rifle in IMO , when you are talking out of the box.  The 89 mentioned can have a lot of issues , paticularily with under-size piston seals , as well as a  piston seal that is made of poor material. This requires work to change out and given your problem with the 48 re-furb you had , it looks like you'd want to avoid those types of issues. You could have someone tune a 89 for you, but then you'd be better off spending the extra money you would spend on that, on a better gun or more ammo and better sights to help you enjoy the gun more.  The Daisy 22SG is a nice plinker but is not a powerful gun, (around 550 fps) , but easy to pump up. It does not have the potential of the 392. Another option would be to buy a used rocker safety CB 9, or .22 Benji 342 that is working or not , and send it to Mac and have the steroid treatment done to it.

TF99 is not in the same league as the others mentioned here. It can be good, and made better, but the trigger is not adjustable and no amount of TLC can put it into the TF89/RWS34 league. I have one of each and TF99 will probably not satisfy you.

The BAM B30 would replace your RWS48 to an extent, and the B40 gives you a cost-effective underlever choice. I don't have either of these, but they both have vocal fans around here!

I would think that you could get a decently tuned.22  MM B-26 for that price - if I didn't have to send ~  $4K to the IRS in a couple weeks I'd be ordering one from him myself right now.

Like so many in Washington these days, - you might make a $236.00 mistake on your return, - and pick up the gun. ;)

Get a steroided Benjamin 392. You can vary the power from plinking up to overkill. I love my 392 and am thinking about either getting it steroided or modding the valve myself.
