Shooting into plaster-a-paris with CPHPs!!!
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:27:16 PM »

OK, well today i got the idea of instead of trying how to figure out how to make and chill ballistics gell, i disided to shoot into semi wet plaster-a-paris

The results I got are pretty self explainatory, But i only used CPHP's

you can see the initial impact and how it pushes all of the plaster-a-paris away, and leaves a nice size open crater.... in the one picture you see all the pellets together.... the VERY flat ones are the regular CPHP, while the other ones are still CPHP's they have slits in the hollow point

Nice Job on the review.  Yea cutting the CPHP's makes a difference on pellet expansion.  And In my tests I didn't see a difference in accuracy, but that was only at 60 feet.  That plaster a paris worked pretty good!  If it were a little stiffer that would be the ultimate.  What worked well for me was a hardend tube of silicon caulking but thats a bit expensive.  I am still debating whether the CPHP's are better than the predators that I have.  right now I am using the predators. When they run out I doubt I'll buy more.  They are way too pricy.

I must be missing something here...you must be using the plaster for a specific purpose, to better examine the deformation.....??

If not, go to Electrical duct sealing putty...works great in a  [totally] silent pellet trap !

no, i'm not using it for any specific purpose, just bored as all hell that day, and wanted somthing to shoot into somthingthat wouldnt get all over the house, though the plaster got over the table anyway when i cut it and then reformed it

Checking out this thread a little while ago inspired me to make some home made ballistics gel and pour it into a golf ball mold I made for fun a while back.  I only have the one pic (below) of a single RWS Superdome's path through it, but the dimpling makes it kinda hard to see.  I've made plaster golf balls with the same mold and they are a lot of fun to shoot, wet or dry.  I would've used a hollow point of some type if I had any on hand at the time.  Technically I had a large selection of pellets to choose from, but I didn't find those long lost tins in my basement till today.  Once I get my scope issues resolved solved (4 - 6 days away) I'll try again with a CPHP or RWS Hollowpoint.

Which reminds me, I took a CPHP shot into a votive candle the other day.  I've got some pics of that if anyone's interested.

I really like seeing what these pellets do to different stuff.  Great pics!

(added in edit)  That's a plastic spoon handle stuck into the ball.  The shot went right through it and through 3/4" silicone rubber that was behind it.  Shot was taken at 20 yds, the pellet was not recovered.
