Gamo 440 Takes On New Look and Feel
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:17:34 AM »

Last year I bought a Gamo 440 .177 new from Natchez. Had not shot it but a few times.I have done several mods on the Gamo S1K's and have been wanting to detune one and ad some bling... I started the tune by doing the regularly de burr polishing, and my normal prep work prior to re assembly. This time instead of using a Tarantula spring I had purchased several Merlin XL springfrom JM a couple months back and have been testing them. It was time to make myself a nice target shooter with using a stock Gamo barrel. I have two other S1K's that have L/Wrifled choked barrels on them. One is a .20 cal and the other is my favorite in .177 cal.I pulled off the front site and checked for the crown and no crown. so i prepared a nice crown on it. I put everything back together using the new prepped Merlin XL spring, stainless polished thrust washer and a slightly moded new top hat. Also used an unfinished GRT-III trigger I had thatCDT so generously donated to my project.

A couple days ago I waschewing the fat withmy buddy Shadow on the phone. We usually talk once a week just to keep tabs on each other..:) I had told him I sure liked the Gamo Hunter Extreme and the barrel shroud it had. But he did bring up a good point. What if the barrel underneath the shroud did not have a crown... hmmmmm No way to pull of that shroud with out screwing something up..:(

So I decided to make a shroud like the Gamo Extremeshroud for my Gamo Hunter 440.. And here are some pictures of the outcome.

I have probably put around200 pellets through the freshly crowned barrel and tune. Today when I was shooting her she started to come in with exceptionally nice 1" tight groups at 30 yards. Overall I am very happy with the results of the Merlin XLSpring. Instead of 900 plus fps she is steady at 800 fps with a very tight 5 fps overall deviation out of a 15 string chrony test. I have been shooting RWS Superdomes and I am gonna try out the JSB Exacts, Beeman FTS and CP's. Just trying to get the barrel seasoned and seal and spring guide seated first.

I was trying for the Hunter Elite look...:) But the best part of the outcome is the soft and smooth cocking and shooting cycle. You could sit and shoot this gun all day without getting tired and she shoots a steady 800 fps. The Merlin XL is a great spring for detuning these types of air rifles.

I almost forgot but I originally got the idea for using the Merlin springs from 3Moon. He has been experimenting on other springer's using the Merlin springs.
