Sorting out the Rules!
« on: March 30, 2009, 06:48:53 AM »
After the first 'Steroid'PCP match, I think it would be a good idea to find out a few things. If you are interested in the longer range shooting with a PCP then can you give me some input so we can standardize the match.
Right then, a few questions.

1. What is your Maximum safe shooting distance?
2. Bipod attached/seperate? Does it really matter?
3. Elbows!! Can they be rested on a table when shooting or would this be classed as 'Off the Bench'?
4. If elbows can be rested, is prone OK, ie laying on the Bench?
5. To keep to the Shouldered rifle aspect of the match, do you prefer no elbow touching?

Any help in standardizing this match would be appreciated.
Cheers Andy

1. What is your Maximum safe shooting distance?
On a regular basis - 20yrds. I can get 30y or 30m often enough to participate. In a few months I'll have access to nearly unlimited distance.

2. Bipod attached/seperate? Does it really matter?
Either way for me. I think I'm the only one who brought this up. The bipod won't work very well from the 'shouldered position' anyway.

3. Elbows!! Can they be rested on a table when shooting or would this be classed as 'Off the Bench'?
Since i was guilty I'll say no - UNLESS folks want a more challenging target or longer distances. When I shoot from a true bench rest I use targets with a 1/8inch bull. I don't always hit them, but thats what I aim for... :-)

4. If elbows can be rested, is prone OK, ie laying on the Bench?
If elbows are okay, I don't see any 'advantage' to prone over bench. Probably the other way around for most.

5. To keep to the Shouldered rifle aspect of the match, do you prefer no elbow touching?
No pref here. I can still teach myself a new position. I still feel silly for not getting that right the first time.

1. What is your Maximum safe shooting distance?
-- 30 yards

2. Bipod attached/seperate? Does it really matter?
-- no

3. Elbows!! Can they be rested on a table when shooting or would this be classed as 'Off the Bench'?
-- if you rest your elbow, can you put your off hand under the stock instead of a bag?

4. If elbows can be rested, is prone OK, ie laying on the Bench?
-- agree, it would essentially be the same position

5. To keep to the Shouldered rifle aspect of the match, do you prefer no elbow touching?
-- doesn't matter to me, I can go either way.  Elbow(s) resting on the bench, and leaning forward over the bench makes it much easier to shoot more accurately.

May I suggest that we defer to someone who actually shoots field trial matches to suggest what is allowed for front rest and what isn't?

Good idea Tommy, who do we know? Another thing I think might benifit all is if we try to stick to an official NRA or field target position so that those who participate in NRA or field target can use the match as a good practice ground! Would I be right in saying that in field target, all the items that you use need to be field transportable, ie fit in a knappsack? We could allow any field target position which would let the shooter pick his or her prefered pose as long as it was a recognised pose! (And Maralyn Munro with a gun blowing a kiss type of pose is not what I mean!) Use you best pose to get your best score!

In field target , the only class that allows a bipod of any kind is hunter class and you are allowed to use one attached or free standing . You can also shoot from the prone position or sitting , using your choice of bipod. I prefer one that is not attached as I don't care to add weight to my rifle . kirby

1) 30 meters now.....can probably get up to 50 meters in the summer (Need more foilage to give me coverage)

2) Doesn't matter to me.

3) Don't have a table to shoot off from.....

4) Can only shoot prone or kneeling....so elbows have to be on the ground....or one elbow on the knee.

5) No comment.....look at answer in #3.

Ok then, how about trying this this week. 30yards, any position you like as long as the gun is not in a vice! So prone is allowed, a fist under the butt is allowed, a bipod attached to the gun is allowed, and for the benifit of Gene, sipping pinacoladas at the same time is allowed! So it's the Steroid15 at 30yards, one shot per target, with a sip of pinacolada between shots! Sounds good to me, what about you guys?

Sounds good to me.  30 yards?   Don't matter to me....I'll just do it at 30 meters......have my markers on twigs set up already from last week.  A few feet difference won't improve or decline my scores.  heh heh
