Made in USA Hunter Extreme
« on: April 07, 2009, 02:16:36 PM »
I was looking at a new .22 cal GAMO Hunter Extreme this morning and as I was holding it and inspecting it I saw something I didn't expect.....

stamped right on the receiver it said ......   "Made In U.S.A."

I put it back in the rack and picked up the .177 cal that was next to it....... that one said ..... "Made In England"...

I didn't know they were making them in the USA.........    :o

It dosen't surprise me. Considering how draconian Englands gun laws are and the whole thing that an FAC  is needed if they want to shoot a pellet gun over 12 foot pounds. I pretty sure that is one of the reasons that Webley tried to move its production to Turkey.

That's interesting. I would have assumed that all Gamos were made in the same place. I guess not. My Whisper says that it was made in Italy.

FWIW, I would rather have one made by the fellows in the old BSA factory than one assembled here, un-American though the sentiment may be to some.  I think the 1250, while a Spanish gun, had much input from the Brits.  Who knows what kind of background the US assemblers have, if they do build them here?

My understanding was that the old 1250 and Extremes were made in England by BSA for Gamo. Both of mine say made in England on them. Having said that I wouldn't put our workers down quite yet. Look at the Benjamin guns, ie Disco and Marauder. Also I don't know if you have been following the BSA Lightning XL topic, but it appears that our cousins across the pond don't have it quite all togeather.

I have a GAMO .22 1250 that I bought a few years ago and it's stamped "Made in England".  The quality on the gun is impressive,,,, as is it's power and accuracy  :)

What was your first impression on the new Extreme stock and metal Jeff. Is it the same exterior quality as your 1250?

Gene, I liked the feel of the new stock,,,, it seemed a little more comfortable than the older 1250 style  as it was a little thinner in the pistol grip area,  but as for the quality/appearance of the stock ???? I was not impressed.  The stocks  on the original 1250's were in my opinion much nicer quality wise.  The stock on my 1250 is gorgeous and I've seen other 1250's and the stocks on them were just as nice.

As for the bluing and metal..... again I'd have to say I think the quality on the older 1250's is much better.   The bluing on the "Made in USA" rifle I was holding was ok but it wasn't anything to write home about.  The bluing on my 1250 is deep, rich and very consistent.

AGain, this is just my opinion,,,, others may differ of course.

Are they building them here or simply assembling?  Might be kind of like when Browning pulled out of Belgium due to rising labor costs there.  The slides on the High Powers were then marked "Made in Belgium and Assembled in Portugal".  Some people felt the quality went a bit downhill after that.

I don't have a clue......   All I know is it was stamped "Made in USA".

I guess it's possible they are assembling it here...  would that constitute "making" it  ????

Either way, I'm very happy with the "Made in England" 1250 that I have resting in my gun safe  so I won't be buying any of the new ones  :)
