A.O. opinions needed
« on: January 14, 2007, 08:45:00 AM »
So, since I'll only be hunting with this rifle (cf-x) and scope does anyone else have an opinion on AO? Im going to get a leapers scope, they sell the 4-12x44 mini swat 30mm in three versions: 100yrd fixed parallax, the 35 yrd fixed parallax and the A.O. model, which would you choose? They also sell a few others with 35yrd fixed parallax or A.O. that I am looking at so it comes down to whether I should get AO and fixed. One guy has already made a very valid point towards fixed so I thought Id ask for more opinions. I WANT MIL-DOT so if you know of one that fits the bill since im leaning towards a fixed parallax since I will never shoot over 40 yards except at the range messing around and even then fifty is the max.

Got some good sites to read in the above post...worth the effort.

IF you are willing to put up with a bit of paralax error at 10yards, then a 35yard setting will work fine...hunting shots at 25-40yards wound't be grossly effected, but your short range groups might be a bit larger than expected.

I do use some fixed paralax scopes on airguns (set for 25yards), but the AO is almost always the better choice.

That was a great read I just still have trouble tryong to apply it to the real world but knowing that I just have to turn the knob till the targets clear for parallax eases the decision, the fact that im hunting in a single location in a fifty yard radius from either balcony means in time I should be bale to learn the sttings for each tree I shoot at. It will be a tough decision but I guess I could get an AO set it at 35 yards and it would be the same as a fixed if I got all confused with it right? It really helps to be able to talk it out loud with you guys.

What about barska? The name sounds cheesy but alot of people like them and only a few dont.

Target image can be cystal clear and in forcus, but still have a paralax error....in the high power scopes, the focus at close range is a good clue to paralax erro, but in lower power scopes it isn't.

To check, set the scope on a solid surface so it points onto a target (or a knothole...or a chalk X on a fence...whtever) without being touched...it sits there all on itsown. As you look though (not touching...no human influence), move yor head from side to side/up and down...if the cross hair intersection dances off the target point, that's paralax.
