.22 v. 177 for PCP
« on: April 08, 2009, 06:36:18 PM »
I have a Daystate Harrier, the old version, with a Korick regulator.  I have a .177 barrel on it now, but recently looking at Discovery info I noticed guns shooting roughly the same fps in .177 and .22.  The .22 seem to be carrying a lot more energy.  I have barrels both in .22 and .177 for this gun.

Would I get simular results with a .22 barrel for the Daystate? Are PCPs just more efficient in .22?

I am determined to get pears out of our pear tree this year, for the past couple of years the grays have taken them all.  They take one bite and toss the pears.  :(

My feeling is....If yer target shooting go with the .177..
but for hunting put the .22 barrel on it.

I agree with Pete.  .22 caliber way more killing power.  Them nutters will be worried if you go .22.  Take some pictures and send them to us.  We love dead varmints.         Paul

Just based on what I have tried with the Chuntsman , if you change barrels and nothing else the power will remain the same, so if it is say 20fpe in .177 it will also be 20fpe in .22 but a big difference in fps eh? Your reg should make this even more true??? Now without the reg, it would be more effecent in .22 (slightly less air used at the same power.  Give it a go and let us all know how it turns out.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but it's been a long time.  You still have the Gamo 220 I did the barrel swap on?

It has been a long time.  I got married in the interim!  Things are good, but I find I am not so interested in shooting since the change.  I've dropped my memberships in the local gun clubs and am really leaning towards the quite, safer PCP air rifles.

I do have the 220, but I don't shoot it much.    I like the Daystate a lot better. In fact, it's about the only thing I shoot.  I am thinking about getting rid of everything else, powder burners included and getting a Marauder when it comes out. I may even get rid of the Daystate, I am not sure about this though as I am very used to it and it's sort of unique with the X2 stock and the work by Korick. Let me know if you're interested. I have a moderated .177 barrel and a .22 barrel for it.

To, sort of,  dehijack the thread, I thought that PCPs were just more efficent in .22 since in .177 the pellet is still accelerating at the end of the barrel. In .22 there's more surface area to push against. If you look at spec on the Discovery it puts out more FP in .22 with, I think, the same power plant.   Does anyone know if this is true?
