Hunting Safari
« on: January 14, 2007, 01:40:48 PM »
I am looking into going on a ground squirrel hunting safari with airguns and rimfires (22 long rife and 17 HMR). Looking for sites in California, Arizona and Nevada. Am going to book a stay near Tule Lake for Beldings and hope to shoot somewhere else also. Any suggestions or leads on guides, locations, farmers who are open to airgun/rimfire hunting or leases on good shooting sites?

That would be a great question to ask JP Shelton. That man knows hunting in that area for sure, especially Kalifornya.

Sounds like a great adventure to me Bob. Keep us informed if you get ahold of JP Shelton and what he has to say.

On the funny side of things: CDT lets me shoot squirrels at his ranch "back yard" and there is no quota.. :)

Every year, the ranchers around Alturas up in Modoc County have a kind of "squirrel fest" where anyone willing to participate in the thing who has a hunting license can do so.  I can't remember the exact dates.  I'll poke around and see if I still have a flyer for the event.

I tried the Chamber of Commerce site but it had no flyer or info yet. I think last year's winner of the "Squirrel Wars" brought in a one day harvest of over 100 tails. Enjoying your web site, keep up the good work. I bought a used Hunter 440 from Gene and still am using the open sights, it is the best of my four rifles by far.

I am thinking of having Gene adopt me so that I can own the largest air rifle collection in the world some day. If that does not pan out, I will just wait and buy the guns he does not need anymore one at a time.
