So, my cfx has about 400 rounds through it and I put it on a chrony to day and shot from 811-824 over five shots with 7.9gr CPL's is that low or is it just my imagination? that comes out to 11.95 FPE.

Well Fat, it is really hard to say. If it is a new CFX and only 400 pellets have gone through it then that is probably about right. You should see a slight improvement on average after another 1000 rounds. Remember that the deviation is the most important part for accuracy and a healthy air gun. Put another 1000 rounds through it and check it again. Don't clean barrel..... At least not for a few thousand rounds. And when you do just run a wet swab with Goo Gone thrrough it. U only need to ever run but a few swabs at one time through your barrel. Never us breass or metal brushes.. Never over clean your barrel...:)

Do you have any other pellets besides Crosmans to try?  That sounds about like what mine does with Crosmans, while Superdomes will do around 900 fps.  BTW, chrony string's typically 10 shots.  HTH.

Hi,
Those numbers seems a bit low for CPL's.  My gun shot them at about 860 - 880 when 400 rounds were through it.  They are a loose fit and don't shoot "well" in my gun, although at 1000 rounds now they are shooting a bit stronger.  I now get 890+ but still weak compared to other pellets which shoot near 14.5 ft lbs   (Logun Penetrators, Superdomes, Kodiaks, Crow Mags...).  Try some other pellets and you'll likely get much different results.  Great gun, I love mine.

Have Fun,

John

Hey John, I personally think that the CFX was made for accuracy over most of the Gamo break barrels. The FPS numbers really do not mean much as long as the deviation holds tight. As long as the FPS is of the norm. I honestly think that depending on the type pellet that you use will of course determine the final FPS and variable in most cases. I go for the tight deviation with a respectable fps. 900 fps is great if it holds a tight deviation. Of course not all CFX's are the same. I have three of them. Two in .177 and one in .22.. The two .177 vary in FPS. My Synthetic holds tight at around 865 - 875 and that is a 10 fps spread, which works for me..:) My other one which is the Royal CFX .177 and the numbers are higher but has 21fps varieation and is not nearly as accurate as my Synthetic..:) I am baffled at times with all these numbers but one thing is for sure. A tight deviation works wonders on accuracy... hehe.

Like I said in my other post above, that Fat's numbers are not all that bad and some of the Gamo's take a bit more pellets run through them before everything seats in. And like you and DaveD suggested, different pellets are a must.

Just my two cents worth.....:)

Hi Gene,
I'm sure you are right about keeping the FPS spread down for accuracy.  I find different pellets offer many different things in my gun.  Some shoot strongly but have a large FPS spread.  Others are weak but accurate.  Some offer a small FPS spread and are less accurate (Crow Mag) than others with larger FPS spreads (CPL).   I'm finding no perfect pellets so far (strong, accurate, small FPS spread, good for hunting... ).   It's sure fun trying and testing though.

Thanks for your wisdom.

Have you tried the JSB Predators yet?  In my Diana 350 .22 they are as close to perfect as I've found.  The only thing they don't do is help me keep money in my wallet!  But you're right, the testing sure is fun!

I tried the Predators in my CFX and was initially dissapointed.  They came out at less than 800 fps and had a rather loose fit in the barrel.  I then used a BB and a few light taps with a mallet to widen out the skirt.  They now "snap" into the breach nicely, like a Kodiak or Crow Mag and I am seeing over 900 fps consistently.   They are not quite as accurate as the CPL, Superdome or Kodiak but darn close and much better than the Crow Mags.  They are presently my primary hunting pellet.

My gun has recently taken a bit more a liking to CP HP's too.  They were about 870 fps and now 900 or so, but still a 30+ FPS spread.  Haven't shot them > 10 yards but will check for accuracy.  Not so sure with the FPS spread.  Going to get some glycerine soap and try the Pred/CrowMag/CPHP expansion tests.

Having fun,

John
