$299 HW30S at PA
« on: April 26, 2009, 03:17:40 PM »
I'm thinking about getting one of these. I've wanted one for a while and I think I could stomach the price. If I do, I'll have to sell my B3s, and probably a few others.

Hey bud, since that's basically an R7 without the checkering, I gotta tell ya- I think it's one of the finest spring-powered air rifles made. Certainly the nicest I've ever had. I have worked my way up and back down, but that is one fine little spring gun. Just like pointing a pool cue and goes wherever you point it, no excuses.

Once you get past the fps thing (as I know you have), this is alittle handfulof quality for the money. I have not done a thing to mine (yet) and after considerable paper practice, did not hesitate to head-shoot a crow (at 15 yds., had the drop on him), and it never took another step or squawk. Just a little sweetheart of a rifle. Petite, well-mannered, accurate as heck, and a beeyootiful trigger. I put the Hawke 2-7x on her and it is a perfect fit.

I think it would be the last to go if I had to bail on airgunning.

Yeah, I pretty much want it for the fact that it's a mild mannered tackdriver. BTW,today I was turning some of that Delrin I got from you. Good stuff. It likes an aggressive depth of cut, high speed, and powered feed. I'm making a prototype ambidextrous cocking piece for my B50 (that will fit under the scope ocular bell). I wish I could have gotten 100 feet of it from you. It's good stuff. I'm thinking about making custom Delrin spring guides for all of my springers that don't already have them.
Back to the WH30S, one of the things I like about it is that it has the Rekord trigger just like the R7 version. I'll probably sell my B3 underlevers, my TF 99, my MP 512, my B3 sidelever/sidefolder and a few others.
I'm good with 675 fps and being able to put them right where  I want them. I seem to recall a member here using an R7 a lot for pest hunting BECAUSE it is a mild mannered, world class shooter.
So, what pellets does your R7 like best?      Yeah, I think my other Weihrauch and my 909 big bore would be right there with that HW30S in the "last to go" category".

Just received an HW30S via the PA 15% off Fathers Day sale.  WOW this thing shoots great.  Way accurate and easy to shoot.  Seems to have plenty of power for anything less then 30 yards, and can certainly hit stuff further.  I see why so many people say if they could have only on air rifle, this (or the R7) would be it.  I am just using it with open sites and really like it this way.

You will love it. My R7 is one of my favorites. I think an HW 50S is next on my list.

I just received mine last week on the 15% discount.  Nice smooth gun so far.  There was no lube under the cocking lever at where it contacts the compression tube though, so I used a piece of paper to slip in some moly grease.  This is important; someone on another forum posted picks of bad galling after only about a 100 shots, I think.  Jim Maccari sells a plastic insert for under this lever to deal with this issue, but the lever has to be removed to install this.

I got the trigger set to a little over a pound of pull.  Cocking is surprisingly smooth, no hint of roughness at all.  Gun never noticeably dieseled at all, but chronys a little slow so far at around 574 for CPLs, but very consistent.  Can't speak to it's accuracy yet, because I'm using open sights on it and my shooting's the limit right now.

It came in with "Select Stock" and "Select Scope Angle" don't know if all Beeman guns come with these nowadays but I'm glad to have them--in the old days they were extra cost options.  I do like the stock, but question it being a "Select Stock," it's nothing special IMO--guess what little grain it has does come through nice.

One annoying thing is Beeman doesn't wrap the gun in plastic in the shipping box, so mine has slight rub marks on the barrel blueing and stock.  Not a big problem on this gun, but I'd be pretty ticked on a more expensive piece.

I got my R1 in yesterday from PA and it was wrapped in plastc but not double boxed. Everywhere else I have purchased from had double boxed them.

That's because Beeman puts all their rifles in a "ready to ship" box.  Or, so I've been told.  Mine came directly from Beeman and it was only in one box.

Mine was not wrapped, but it was double boxed.

I did notice some "friction" a couple times while cocking it.  This must be the galling you are trying to prevent with the moly grease.  I will try to slip some moly grease in mine as well.  Thanks for the tip.

Mine from PA did have double box, just no plastic.  I wouldn't think my Beeman box would be enough to ship without an outer box.  Maybe there are new Beeman packaging with plastic and thicker box walls...

I haven't noticed any friction at all with mine.  But when I saw that picture on the straighshooters forum I didn't want to wait until the damage was done.  That gun was damaged pretty bad, the galled area had a really rough texture, needs to be smoothed out before it can be used with the cock lever insert.

I don't know how HW can let guns out like that.  My front sight shot loose in about 10 shots.  When I pulled off the stock after around 50 shots to look at the cocking area, I noticed the front trigger guard was loosened up already, and the rear screw was just finger tight.

My front site also fell off.  It is a shame that you almost take a brand new gun apart before you shoot it.
