Winchester 1000 XS strikes again

Came home late this afternoon from running errands and when I pulled into the driveway saw some more pigeons in the trees in the back yard.  Closed the car door gently, went into the house, down into the basement and came outside thru the bilco door with the Winchester alreaded loaded.  

Had a clear shot at a bird perched 25 yards away in the top of the maple tree.  Squeezed the trigger gently, the gun fired and the CPHP hit with a loud thwack.  Bird hit the ground dead.  The remaining birds departed, but I loaded the gun with another hollow point and retreated to a secluded section of the yard near the corner of the house to wait.

Sure enough, after  about 15 minutes a couple of starlings and 1 pigeon landed in the tree tops.  Picked out the pigeon, fired, the hollow point slammed home again with the same result.   This gun is definately "rough" but I still can't get over how hard it spits those pellets out.  

This part may have some of you making faces but,,,,,,, plucked my two trophies, wrapped some bacon around them, seasoned them a bit, and basted them with herb butter as I broiled them slowly in the oven until the skin turned a beautiful copper color.  Had them for dinner and they were delicious to say the least.

Good shooting Jeff and I thought I smelled bacon bird cookin,just could'nt track down the source hehe.Thought I'd pull some dinner out of the ice box tonight and make some stuffed rabbit. Gettin time to go out and restock the icebox.:) hunting' Ed

Huhm, (making faces) you're eatin' pidgeons eh?

I wont shoot anything I wont eat, except for plastic green Army men, not much meat on those.  Good to see someone else has that idea firmly planted too....even if they are eatin'....pidgeons:)

Good one Jeff,..........I took my Hatsan 60 (.22) out to work the other day as I had noticed a couple of rabbits had set up home in the Botanic Gardens near the prized plant specimen beds where we grow the exotics. We really can do without that. I had cleaned out the area pretty well over the last year so hunting had become a bit sparse until now.

Neighbouring farmers don't bother to control their pest populations so inevitably they migrate to where the population pressures are less,......my patch!

Anyway took a young 'un just on dusk at 40m, and had to creep up from under the cover of a slight rise in the ground, popped up kneeling and took it snappish, watched it jump three feet in the air and flop down dead headshot. One less to worry about.

And no I didn't take it home to eat it,.......its my job, I have to do it,........I'm so put upon!

I dont eat pigeons, I come from Philadelphia, we called them sky rats.

But I have eaten a lot of partridge though, next time baste the birds with honey a few times, the skin turns a sweet golden brown. Also put onion, celery, oranges, and lemon inside, cut up of course, adds flavor to the bird.

One time I was at a banquet at the Belview Straffore Hotel (no longer there), and I ashed what we were eating, tasted like real soft chicken, the waiter said it was squab ? I asked him what's that? he said young pigeon... and off I went, almost didn't make it, near soiled my penguin suit.
Just think, serving  pigeon at a fancy Philadelphia Hotel ?

Hey Bill,

That seems to be the feeling of most diners when it comes to pigeon, but that's ok with me........more birds left for me  :)

Thanks for the cooking tip, I will give that a try next time.
