My advice,..by a new one and get it tuned. I've never cared for re-furbs,...after some of the complaints I've heard from those that buy them, if it's new,...you'll have no one else to blame either,...if it turns out to be a dud. I love my .22 34 Diana the best of all my springers!!!  Just a tough, reliable, and very accurate rifle in it's price range,....Believe me,..you won't be disappointed in the least!!!!! Good Luck,...and an excellent choice of rifle BTW, tjk
PS Not that I'm saying their aren't good 'used' rifles from many of the fellow Air-gunners in the GTA Fam,...but most don't want to give them up so easily,....they're (the 34's) just that dang good!!!!

Check them out. They have the M34 listed for $175 but it's out of stock right now. They should get some more in I would imagine. That's cheaper than some people sell them used for. Mid South Shooters is a little bit more expensive, but some times you can catch a sale there. Umarex refurbs are the cheapest way to go. Some people have had bad luck with refurbs. Not me, I'm on my 3rd refurb(maybe I'm lucky I don't know).

Used to have an air rifle side business in the early 90s. I still have anew, in the box,West German model 34 caliber .177.  Excellent air rifle. Excellent first rifle.   You can have it for $175 plus $20 shipping if you are interested.  It will be shipped double boxed.

Call Umarex at 1-479-646-4210. They have some great deals. I got a RWS 34 pro for 214.00 with scope, mount and shipping all included. They do stamp a R onto the barrel and stock ( refirb. ) so you can't sell it has new. They said mine was a demo, maybe less than 50 rounds through it. It's a beautiful rifle, well made, shoots well. It had some marks on the barrel and a few on the stock from handling, but for the price I could live with it. Good luck.

I'm on a pretty tight budget and being retired these days is difficult.
How loud is this gun and is it likely to disturb my neighbors?

If you would like to give me a call I'd be glad to chat with you.  I can be reached after 8:00 p.m. CDT on my cell at 319-231-4411.  I'm not trying to sell you anything but I might have enough knowledge to answer your questions, at least on springers or gas rams.  I have very little experience with PCPs.

I appreciate comments as it gives me a few things to think about. I contacted the gentleman with the 34 you mention and it is a nice price, but in addition to having limited funds, I'm mostly interested in a wood stock. It would seem I'll have to be patient. Would there be much difference in noise and ability to kill crows with a .177?

If you hit your target, and I don't mean the crow, I mean the spot on the crow where you are aiming either the .177 or the .22 will do the job.  Pellet choice, taking the time to learn where your rifle will shoot at different ranges and a decent scope are critical.  A .22 with a heavier pellet will move slower but loose its energy slower as well.  A .177 will leave the muzzle at a higher velocity and have a flatter flight trajectory and is easier to get comfortable with faster.  Many years ago, when I was selling air rifles a gave an RWS 34 to my father.  He had black birds dive bombing him and his guests, and *_*_*_*_*_*ting on them while they were in the swimming pool.  I had given him a lower power air rifle some months earlier but the black birds soon learned the effective range of that rifle and simply stayed out of range.  Once he had the 34 he could take out a black bird anywhere in his yard.  His yard was 1.1 acre.  The blackbirds left his yard and took up camp in the neighbors yards.  I sold both of them model 34s as well.  There after the black birds took a detour around all three yards.  I put  2-7x32 scopes on all there rifles.

That's a great story.

Before my 50 year old Sheridan gave up the ghost, I took a shot at a crow sitting on my balcony railing and it flew away. My wife was standing there laughing and commented on how I missed from 30 feet. I told her I couldn't have missed and went out to look below for a dead bird. Nothing. Several weeks later my wife was at the pool talking to a neighbor who related a story of hearing a bang, then seeing a crow land on the pool railing and promptly falling over dead.

I don't think the RWS 34 is a quiet gun. Everytime I shoot my 34 pro, a dog 3 houses down barks. All I can hear is the spring and inner workings of the gun and the pellet hitting the trap. None of my neighbors have complained though.

I agree, it is not quiet, but less so than a PCP without an LDC.
The 34's I have owned (about 5 in 177 and 22) have all been buzzy, twangy guns.
Heavy and long for the "actual" power you get from them.

Have you thought about a BAM and having it modded?
A much better choice, IMHO:)
