Glossary and budget scope recommendation(s)

First off, excellent site, and after reading posts for a while, what seems like a truly exemplary group of contributors.

I'm *very* new to airgunning.  Every discipline has it's jargon.  Jargon is not gibberish, it's the special vocabulary for a particular technology or discipline.  My lovely bride os 43 years is a nurse and she uses words and concepts that used to have no meaning to me.  I've learned over the years so now I can understand some of what she says.  So I have two requests.

FIRST: As I am learning about airguns, I find a LOT of acronyms and terms that I'm constantly trying to decipher, Weaver mount, 11mm mount...  FPS I figured out, but some of what I think are projectile energy ratings are still foggy.  And there are lots more.  It would be a wonderful help to my (and maybe others) learning curve if there were a glossary of terms, acronyms, and concept definitions available.  Perhaps it does exist and I've just not found it.  Most computer-technology sites have an FAQ page that deals with Frequently Asked Questions that are often asked by newbies.  That would be sooo helpful.

I've saved lots of stuff from Charlie and Gene's web sites and that's all good, no excellent. reading.  I find it so interesting that hard-earned experience and self developed tools would be so freely shared.  In many other venues, that kind of information would be closely held and certainly NOT shared.  Speaks volumes about the generosity that I find here.

SECOND: I have a .22 cal Gamo 440 Hunter.  I bought a Gamo scope and *then* a Gamo scope stop. I learned about scope creep. :-(  I bought the Gamo in .22 cal for varmints.  We live in chipmunk central and those striped rats burrow everywhere.  Our brick patio has started to undulate because those vermin tunnel under it.  They learn to avoid poison, but they are not immune to lead poison.

The budget is tight, retired now, and with 4 daughters scattered from coast to coast the extra cash is usually spent on travel to keep in touch with our kids and grandkids.  Leaves little to devote to hobbies and interests.  I wish that I'd discovered this forum before I bought my Gamo scope.  I'm learning, but I can't afford too many trial and error experiments.  The Gamo scope that I bought is junk, to put it charitably.  No "click" adjustment feel and enough slop in the adjusting screws to make the whole zeroing process a mater of by-guess-and-by-gosh.  All that to say that I'm asking for some recommendations for a economical, durable, airgun scope that will stand up to the beating that the 440 seems to give it.

The Glossary question,...I can't answer, ain't found it either!!!!LOL's But for your scope question,...Check out what your local Wal-mart has to select from. The Center-Point scopes are a real value, and pretty good to boot for a "Economy" scope. Depending on the severity of 'barrel-droop' your particular rifle has,...the factory one piece that came with it,...if it didn't come with rings?!?!?,.......should be OK to stick with. Other wise you'll either have to shim the scope, or get an adjustable mount. Just remember this,....you'll want to set,...or align the scope with the barrel ( elevation-wise,...if the barrel droops,....shim the REAR ring!!!),...and not the reciever/action of the rifle. Another thing to consider is the harshness of the firing cycle. If it's rough,...and neads a scope stop to eliminate any movement,...you'd be well advised to have it tuned. There are different degrees of tuning,...but from and economical stand point, a lube tune may be all that you need to 'tame' a rough fireing weapon. Just depends on how much you want to invest in the rifle. BTW,...by the way,....welcome to the GTA,...It's A Great Place To BE!!!!! Best of Luck, tjk
