Hunting with PCPs... PCP of your choice?
« on: May 09, 2009, 03:01:41 PM »
Hey guys!

Thanks for the quick response on the last threath.. very usefull info.
now Its just about deciding which PCP its best for me! some opinions based on your likes and dislikes on PCP rifle would be nice.
Some factor to consider to narrow what I want will be..

1) I already have a Whisper 0.177 so For a dark side transition I would like a 0.22 to hunt!
2) about the price.. I will be able to aford a 600 or less PCP because I will still have to invests on a hand pump (which I still dont know the price for.. let hope less than a 100$ any help?)
3) Talking of money how good is the Crosman Discovery 0.22 out of the box? can you make it a better shooter by changing something or its OK as it is?
4) have anybody had any complaints about the Disco? I woul not be able to test it until I bring it to Ecuador so I dont want any surprises! LOL
5) any other cheap PCP better than the disco?

any help, opinion is very much apreciated! Im New at PCP.. still dont know what else I might need besides pellets!

Not going to get a pump for less than $200, so bring your gun price down a bit to $500 to come out to the same start up cost.  Are 4 rifles in the $500-$480 range. Marauder (real production is just starting up...first rifles being delivered now), Pneuma, Sumatra, and the AirForce Talon.

It's a lot of work to pump up the big tank on the Talon and the style of the rifle doesn't appeal to many.
Style is also an issue with the Sumatra (full length or carbine).
Pneuma is also pretty new...good write ups.
Marauder will be in short supply for quite some time but looks to be the best combination of features.

There is also the China made BAM 50 and 51 which can be found on-line for less than $340.

But the best deal going, esp. in a hunting rifle, is the Discovery (it and the pump would be about $400).  YES, there has been some problems with  some of them, but Crosman seems to be responsive in either fixing them or replacing them.

So...becasue you are new to PCP's, are going to be filling with a pump, and and may decide that PCP's are not for you...get the Discovery.  Makes a good hunting rifle, lite and easy to fill with a pump.  Worst comes to worst, can usually sell them used without a great big loss of $.

One other facter is noise some PCPs a very loud..and not being able to
to reduce it could become a factor.....
If possable look for another way to fill...Scuba tank / compresser , I know
there a $ factor there...but a hand pump quickly takes the enjoyment
out of a PCP...

Your biggest problem may be shooting in Ecuador.  If you get an air gun that is not reliable then your screwed in that part of the world.  So saying that you might consider spending a little more for a more reliable gun.  You can get a used (sometimes not very used at all) for $700-800.  AA 410, BSA's (peakchick), FX's any model etc. Very reliable weapons and easy to pump.  If that's to much money, then consider a springer.  Lots of good springers out there.  I will be living down in Costa Rica next year for 4-6 months and will bring both a PCP and a springer.  How long will you be in Ecuador?           Paul

Actually I lived in Ecuador my hole life! I am from Ecuador.
We used to have AIr guns here but because of a consecutive large amount of things that happened including new president taxes, prohibitions, they dont sell them anymore anywhere in Ecuador so it was a great dela that I was able to bring my whisper here after 1 year of strugle.
Did you said that peachick has an S410 for sale??? nice! or did I get it wrong?

No Peakchick does not have one for sale.  She just knows a lot about them and BSA's.  Do they allow air guns there?  They do in Costa Rica.  Can't wait to hunt there!     Paul

Check out the Mac-1 or Mountainair Discos. They go through them with a little tune job and make sure you dont get a lemon. They might even tune the triggers. If you are hand pumping stay away from the Talon(I speak from experience). Handpumping to 2000 psi was pretty easy, the last 1000 psi is a bear, and I am a 6'3" 200 pound concrete finisher who thought it would be pretty easy. Go for the tuned Disco they fill to 2000psi, and have a smaller air chamber. Handpumping to 2000psi souldn't be too bad at all. Get a good pump(Hill or FX). Just my .02 cents.

acdtually nobody has them anymore they are supossed to be prohibited. but after research I got the permit from the police without to much effort and have all the paperwork in line. and no problems. so actually yes they are allowed with the correct paperwork. I sooo happy but if you want one you have to bring it yourself thats the only issue any of my friends have airguns. so I`m gonna have to hunt alone... too bad

Sounds like a tough place to buy a PCP!.  I use and recomend a hill pump I have water/moisture filter on it due to humid conditions you may have similar ? Pilkington aiguns sells them for a great price if needed. This site may be of interest to you if not already seen it   http://www.pyramydair.com/precharged-pneumatics-basics-article.shtml. Btw I also recomend FX guns.   Best of luck , Tony

Thats a great tip! Yes there is a lot of moisture where I live. I have also seen the FX guns! They are great! But unfortunately really expensive. Do you know who sells them in USA?
I like the Dicovery Only bad thingis that the 0.22 shoots around 800 FPS or less.. And that compromises the range of the airgun do you know how far can you make a good kill with a discovery?
Im goingto chek oput those links for the pump and for the tunned discoverie, sounds intersting

Yep I have to totally agree with Rib. You would better off starting with the Crosman Discovery with the pump. The main thing is that you will have Crosman on your side for warranty problems if they should occur.
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

HAve been inside several PCP's...certainly not all of them, but a few and have looked at the take-down of many of them.  KNOW i can take apart a Discovery completely without any specail tools or training...can replace the few seals ther it has...can take the trigger all the way down (it's super simple).  given a handfull of spare parts, could keep one running for decades.

IN your situation, needing to be self reliant, the Discovery is probably as easy as PCP to keep running as any on the market.

If i were dead seripous bout keeping one working for a long time, would buy the Discovery, avoid the discovery pump, and buy a Hill pump.  Hill pump isn't magic, but it is the easiest to rebuild of any on the market today.  The rifle, Hill pump, spare seals for the rifle, rebuild kit for the Hill, rings, a resonable scope sight...call it $630-$660.  Use the spare $ to your $700 limit to buy as many good pellets as you can.
