waxing the outside of your barrel
« on: January 24, 2007, 10:11:39 AM »
have you guys heard of this and how well does it work? Also what is a good wax? I was considering a teflon boat wax (I have on hand)

Nope, never heard of it...is it for rust prevention...salty fingerprints, etc.?  Or are you gonna strap a couple of guns to your feet and ski   8)   Seriously though, it sounds like a good idea...I just wipe off all the metal surfaces with a silicone rag when I'm done shooting.

Use to duck hunt and got into the habit of waxing the devil out of the shotgun before a hunt (even if it's not misting, it's still a very wet sport). I'd use Johnson's paste floor wax, but so long as the waqx has no abrasives (car wax often does...don't know about boat wax) it won't do any harm  and will protect from moisture so long as the coating is intact.  I won't bother doing that to an airgun (or any gun) unless I'm taking it out into the field.

I'd not buff the wax coat, wanting that non-refelctive dull haze for hunting.  Made clean up a bit harder, but thought it was worth the non-glint surface.

Hadn't thought about if for my guns, but I use furniture wax (Minwax) on the steel tables on all my shop tools, table saw, jointer, etc.  Not only protects the metal from rust and spills, but makes things slide better without leaving any residue.  May have to give it a try.

Minwax, great idea!  I usually spray down my shop tools with wd40 and then wipe them off, just to inhibit rust on the tables and such.  Most of my handtools have liberal amounts of jet engine oil permanently soaked into them from work....hehe, I haven't worked in that industray in almost 7 years, and I still pull tools out of my rollaway and get my hands oily from them...hehe, guess that is a side effect of being a pig at work:)

I have those silicone impregnated gun socks.  I just put my guns back in those and kinda wipe as I go, nothing has rusted so far.  There about $6-$8 I think and sometimes I see two and three packs on sale at Cabellas.

I use Rem Oil. Spray on a shop cloth and wipe down stock, barrel and all. I have applied a good wax first on my wood stocks. My guns sit on a rack in the garage and I am sure are exposed to the dampness. So every week I wipe em down with rag sprayed with rem oil. Never been shooting in the rain so I dont know what the reaction would be..:) I also run a patch with a bit of rem oil through the barrel once. Not to clean it but to coat it. This is when I do not shoot a particular gun all the time like my Gamo Hunter Royal 1250 .22 which does alot of sitting....:) Not for sale, Ed or Dano...... hehe

Hey Gene, that hurts me buddy.  Hurts me right where it hurts, in the cocking arm shoulder.  I believe you're saying that I might want any of your guns that don't get shot oftenned, this is simply not the case, you would most definately want more money than I could afford to spend on that 1250...besides I have a bad shoulder it would be hard for me to cock it....there you go, making fun of the crippled shoulder guy.  Some guys have 14 or 15 guns and think they can belittle us guys that only have 11 or 12 guns, geez, the justice of it all!!!  Sheesh!!!

I'll have you know I am not at all interested in that 1250!!! So there!!!

btw:How often do you shoot that Sumatra?  I've been kinda itchin' to get my hands on one of those.

btw:btw part 2: You should see that walnut stock now, bet you're going to want this new gun when I'm done....but I'm not selling....what do you have for trade?
