Gamo breach seal

I have a question regarding a review that someone did on Pyramidair talking about the Gamo Shadow series rifles. He said that 'halfway through a tin of pellets, his breach seal tore.' He proceeded to say that it's fairly common in the Gamo rifles and he simply ordered a few spare breach seals from Gamo and popped the 'tore' one out and replaced it. I'm curious if this really is a common occurrence on Gamos? If so, where is the breach seal and how would I know if it's torn? It seems my velocities have dropped on my Big Cat and I would like to be able to check if this could be the cause. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Common in Gamo rifles ?

On my Whisper, the seal's in the front face of the reciever. It's fine, and the breach face is smooth, so I don't see anything that would damage it. I've put way more than half a tin of pellets through it.

Could it be something to do with the way the Shadow is made ?

Paul, I'm not sure if the Shadow is made much different than my BC. However, he made it sound like this was common with all the Gamos. Do I have to take my stock off to view this breach seal or can it be seen without doing so? Thanks for your input.

Unless I'm mistaking it for something else, you should be able to see it when you cock the gun and the breach is open to drop a pellet in. It's either in the breach face surounding the breach opening, or the reciever face surounding that opening as mine is. Either way it should be visable when the breach is open.

The seal you are speaking about is on the barrel breech. It is exposed when you cock the gun. It is not uncommon to see that seal distorted or partially torn. Generally this seal rarely needs replacing. In some case's when you do replace the seal the new seal will extend to far past the barrel breech so when you cock your gun it will not lock or close up properly. So your POI will drastically change.

OK perfect! You guys have helped me understand this. My seal appears normal looking to me. I see no tears or deformities. I can understand how this could affect the POI, but would a torn seal also decrease the velocity of the gun? The velocity was the main concern that was being addressed. Thanks again for your help.

Trey, there are a couple ways to test a bad breech seal. First cut a small piece of wax paper and load a pellet in the barrel bore. Then slide the piece of wax paper in between the barrel bore and the breech block. Close the barrel. Take a shot and then open the barrel. If the hole in the piece of wax paper is round then you have no problems. If the wax paper is torn to the side then you may have a leak.

Another way is take a little strip of one of the layers of toilet tissue and lay over the breech area after you have loaded a pellet. Shoot the gun and see if the paper blows off. The best way to do this test is inside where there is no wind blowing.
