optics on a whisper?

Does anybody know if a leapers 4-16x50 will fit on a whisper? Is it too long? And will I have to buy a new mount. Also any recomendatiions for a mount. Same questions for the 3-9. I really would appreciate any input

I say go to Wal-Mart, get the CenterPoint 4-16x40 AO (re-branded Leapers) for $70, and be done with it.  It also has an illuminated mil-dot reticle in five levels of Red or Green, and a lifetime warranty.  See pics of that on my Whisper toward the bottom of this thread: http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=16951&posts=24#M141820

I wondered the same thing when I was just looking for a new scope for my Whisper.

The Leapers 4-16 side adjustable AO  is listed as being 14 inches long. Guestimating, I figured it wouldn't clear the open sight plastic hump above the breach without using high mounts. I like  a good cheek-weld on the stock, so I don't want to use mounts any higher than necassary.

I got the 3-12 x 44 mini swat instead, which is a 30mm tube and  listed as 10 inches long. Got the Leapers medium high 30mm one-piece mount to go with it. With the scope mounted as far back in the mount as possable (front bell just touching the front ring)...... and the shade tube threaded in .... there is 1-1/4 inch between the front edge of the tube and the rear sight hump.

I have the Leapers 3-9X44 on my Whisper. It's 14.1" long and I would suggest not go any longer than that, 13 would be about right. I did remove the rear sight to make clearance for the flip up lens cover. It's mounted with a 1 piece Accushot 30mm high mount.

I'm having the same problem with height of scope.  I've removed the front and rear sights (and Bumps) so they are not an issue.  Is anyone using just the mount (ie: Accushot 1 piece) without the Gamo rail?  That lowers it down even more, but is it strong enough?   Also, by removing the rail, I am able to get the scope further to the rear.  Thoughts and comments?  Bob

Yeah that dopey rail was one of the first things to come off my Whisper.

It just put the scope up where I couldn't get a good cheek-weld to the stock. Since it's only three screws and a stop pin just like the one piece mount has,  I didn't see anyway it can help hold the scope better, so into went back into the box.  I think Gamo only includes it to get the scope up above the open sights so they don't get in the view as much. The open sites were next into the box.

Even with that spacer rail off, the scope was still too high, so  I made a 1/2 high  leather cheek pad. Now when I shoulder the gun and put my cheek snug on the stock, my eye is right in line with the scope.

Leapers says their medium height one-piece mounts are good for their scopes with up to 45 mm objectives. This 3-12x44  30mm mini swat  has plenty of clearance between the barrel and front bell to use the thick plastic Leapers flip-open cover on the front bell. And length-wise it has enough clearance to have the sun shade on and still be able to open a Butler Creek flip-open cover without hitting the breach rear sight hump.

I have taken a similar approach with a few additional modifications.  Since I am using Leapers (2 50mm and 1 40 mm) on my three Whispers, I am not only removing the fixed sights, but also the bumps.  The .22 is already done and works well.  I epoxyed the holes, dovetail, etc. and then sanded flush, painted, and will spray with clear matte.

  I have used the leather cheek piece, Karsten adjustable etc. over the years and much prefer the truly adjustable cheek piece.  So, I am in the process of tearing up a stock and designing a mechanism to have an adjustable cheek piece.  

It's all a work in progress, but I will post the results once I perfect the process and have one of my lady friends show me how to do links and photos and such.

I appreciate your response and will immediately install the Accushots without that stupid rail.  Thanks again - Bob

I have a Leapers 3-9X32 on my Whisper, and am very pleased with it. I had bought this scope recently from Dave @ Cobra Outdoor Sports for another gun, but the Gamo scope that came with the Whisper wasn't cutting it, so I swapped the Leapers onto the Whisper. Fit was definitely not an issue, and the scope does the job.

So far, so good.  I don't have a lot of shots on the clock with it yet; I'd say 500 - 700 shots with the Air-Venturi gas ram.  Those are definitely harder on scopes than the factory spring is and it has been fine.  No zero shift, no moving in the mount, and the yardage markings on the AO are pretty darn close!  I'm happy with it so far.

My whisper gas ram has destroyed 3 scopes. The first the 3-9x40 gamo scope that came with it and the other two are the Centerpoint 4-16x40AO. I really liked the scope. The first time the adjustment wheels went out. No clicks, just free wheeled. The 2nd scope was brand new and after about fifty shots the focus went. It was like looking down a long tunnel. Walmart had no problems taking them back. This time I got a 3-12x40AO Bushnell which sits right next to the Centerpoint in Walmart. So far so good. I wish you luck for your Centerpoint. If it breaks, let us know. I'm sure mine was just the luck of the draw.

Scopes are generally rated for springers as: light recoil, medium recoil and heavy recoil.. Straightshooters has some of the best rated scopes by manufacturer devided into these three classes. Take a look.Most Gamo Series springers are Medium recoil. Of course the magnum springers such as the Gamo 1250, Patriot, and the RWS 350, 460, 48, 52 and 54 would go under Heavy Recoil.
