B28 Pellet Preference
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:19:16 PM »
My MM tuned B28 .22 now has approx 1,000 rounds through it and seems to be thoroughly broke in.  I have had a Centerpoint 4x16x40 mounted on a UTG no droop mount throughout this period.  Did have to replace the high mounts that came with the scope with medium ones to give me a better sight picture.  Absolutely no scope movement with this setup.  Replaced the two fore end screws with hex screws, lock washer, and wrapped with teflon.  These have remained tight for approximately 500 rounds.  Trigger guard screw was also wrapped with teflon and has remained tight.

Mike recommended the Gamo Hunters as the pellet to use during the break in period.  This gun really likes the Hunters as I can consistently get five shot groups in the .5-.6 inch range at 20 yards off a bench.  My best group to date is a .40.  Best it will do with RWS Superdomes is approx two inches at 20 yards.  These are consistent groups covering the entire two inches. The Superdomes fit loose in the breech while the Hunters and Predators fit tight. The interesting thing is that the POI of a Predator out of a cold gun is almost identical to the POI of the Gamo Hunters while the Superdomes print an inch high and right.

Since I just can't be totally satisfied with a combination of a cheap pellet and a great hunting pellet shooting to the same point, I have these questions.  Do magnum springers have a sweet spot for a particular weight range that they will shoot most accurately or is it a combination of weight and breech fit?  Mine seems to like the ones that fit tight in the 15-16 grain range.

My B-28 seems to shoot best with both RWS SD's, and JSB Exact Jumbo's (15.8 grains),...but it shoots other pellets just as well. Like the Beeman FTS's and Silver Stings. I guess I got lucky to have a gun that isn't pellet picky,...but shooting off hand takes a little more hold sensitivity technique. tjk

I've got my local pellet supplier to procure some .22 Cro Mags next week,.....kinda heavy,...still  wondering though,.. can the B-28 handle these hammers?!? Mike tuned and re-springed my B-28  with an after-market Macarri spring,...what spring Mike used,..I have no idea,...but he said it would shoot alot smoother. Can the Macarri springs hold up to this level of weight?!? I guess you could say my B-28 has been 'de-tuned' so to speak (750's with SD's),.. slightly weaker spring power I would assume,......but she shoots like a dream and I'd hate to mess her up with such a jump in grain weight. Hope some of the 'seasonned 'super mag' springer folks will chime in!!!!! tjk
PS Maccarri products are top notched for sure!! I reckon you could call me an "old school buttons" kinda springer shooter!!!! LOL's
