That is an excellent analogy for students that have difficulty as rational thinkers.
I explained it to my daughter many years ago when she brought up this subject form a school lesson. And the teacher had realy drummed this into the children's heads. She was very adamant that I was wrong, And that she wanted to share her new bicycle to her girlfriend, because she didn't have one, and that she should share her wealthbecauseshe believed in the Socialist Society so much. And she did, just to spite me. In a few days she came to me, and wanted me to buy her another bicycle, she told me how much her friend was enjoying her bike, and that she wanted one also ! I told her to convince some other child just how great Socialism was, and see if they would giveher theirs. After a short time she came back to me crying, and wanted me to buy her a bike. I told her to see if her friend would be willing to share the bike she gave her. She returned and told me that she was not willing to share her new bike with my daughter ! And my daughter cried, and wanted a new bike ! I told her that she made a decision to be a socialist, and give away what was hers, and I informed her that I am NOT A SOCALIST, I'm a Capitalist, and work very hard for my money, and I will not buy her anything that she would give away ! I told her she could work for a new bicycle, and we would give her chores to do, and that if she did them properly, I would pay her for her work. She then asked me, when will you get me a new bicycle ? I told her when she earned enough money to pay for it ! It was a long summer before she came close to the cost of the bicycle that she wanted, and she is a staunch Capitalist Conservative today !
I felt badly for her when she watched the other kids riding their bikes, but she had many other toys and a large swing set to play with, most lasting lessons come from suffering !
It's always nice to get something for nothing, until you have nothing !
