New CF-X arrived, but with a defect
« on: February 01, 2007, 09:06:40 AM »
I have a scope ordered for the CFX. Good thing too. The CFX rear sight has loosened to the point that it cannot be sighted in. If I wanted to shoot this gun with open sights I would have to send it back or try and fix it myself. Yes I could epoxy the sight to the front pins and so-on, but on a brand new gun?
I believe the shipping and handling was the culprit in the defect. Anyway, just wanted to let every one know that what can happen,...will happen. I am hoping to recieve the Leapers 3-12x44 mini scope by the weekend. If not, I still have my trusty Shadow  8) !

nyairman,

I would file a damage claim against the carrier that delivered the rifle. I have had to do the same thing myself. Best of luck...

What do you mean, it "loosened"?

Did something actually break on it?

I don't understand the problem.  As I recall, the elevation screw also holds the entire sight on.  Memory's a little fuzzy, I took off the iron sights almost as soon as I got the rifle.  Could you take a picture?  Maybe it actually a missing spring?  I'm confused (quiet, Gene! And you too, Dano!).

If you need a part for it I have a bag full of gamo sights I removed from rifles.
Just show me what it looks like.

Sorry for the confusion. I hope the pic works. The rear site's "body is attached to a pin in the front. The connection is loose causing the site to move left and right. Also the body is not tight to the gun. It can be "rocked" up and down or "wiggled". In other words the whole unit is loose and therefore unable to be sighted in correctly. Just a touch with a finger and the sight is off from being moved left or right.
Thanks for the feedback. Hoping the scope will be here tomorrow.

Sorry if I'm going over old ground, but it sounds like
a) the spring between the two sections of the sight may be missing and
b) the fixing screw to the gun is loose.
Unscrew the elevation screw completely and remove it (this does not hold the sight on the gun). Towards the rear of the lower section there is a well which should contain a half inch or so spring and under the spring is the Phillips head screw that fixes the sight onto the gun.

On my own CFX, by the time the elevation had been raised enough to sight the gun, the click stops didn't click any more. I removed the elevation screw, "opened" the sight and with small long nose pliers, gently bent the part of the sight base that impinges on the click stop dimples under the head of the elevation screw. Hard to put into words, but it's obvious when you open up the sight.

Yup. That's why I don't like those sights.

The "cheap" sights that came on Shadow's and 220's don't do that!

Anyway, I don't think the "side-to-side" is supposed to be controlled by the pin. The rear of the sight base (the part that screws to the gun) has a section that sticks up, and the upper part of the sight is supposed to straddle it snuggly. If there's too much clearance between this guide and the sides of the sight, it'll wiggle back and forth.

If yoy remove the elevation adjuster you can pivot the sight upward, and bend the side of the sight in a little bit so that it fits snuggly over the guide. The section you can bend is behind the "e" clip for the windage adjustment and ahead of the blade. If you try to bend the other side as wel, you're probably going to booger up the windage adjustment detent, so only do it on this side. The metal is quite soft, so don't go nuts.

And while the the sight is pivoted up, you can make sure that the screw that holds the whole assembly onto the rifle is tight.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yes, the rear site they install on the new CFX's are chessy in my opinion compared to the pretty good one that came with my S1K. But the new Leapers scope I installed takes care of the defect with the sight. I posted a pic on the defective rear site earlier in this thread along with a more detailed explanation of what the problem actually is. As soon as the weather breaks, I will be able to post some results on the accuracy of the rifle and pellets used. Thanks again guys! :D
