G-1 Goes On The "Chop Block"!!
« on: June 04, 2009, 11:15:34 AM »
Been shooting my self tuned G-1 that Gene gave me last couple of days. I was less than enthused with my groups & my Buddy J Woodcock suggested I try recrowning it. Well,, I did,,, right after I cut it down to 14.5"!!The "Surgery" went very well & I could NOT be more pleased with the results!!She balances & shoots like a DREAM!! This one is definatly a keeper!! She looks really sweet with the break Gene gave me too!! Thanks Gene!!Tim.

Nice chop! How short can you chop her without affecting accuracy and cocking effort?

This one sure turned out well,, Im very pleased!! Leo,, Im not sure if I would want to go much shorter than 14",, not so much because of accuracy or cocking effort (this one is butter smooth & easy to cock & plenty accurate) but more because it looks very "ballanced" at this lenth. Much shorter they begin to look kinda wierd. She now looks & handles quite well,,,, shoots GREAT too!!I sure would LOVE a Summit or Siera stock for it!! Tim.

Tim, the chop looks good.  How did you cut it?  Did you crown with a dremel or did you do the tedious bearing method?  I'm going to chop my Summit this weekend.  Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I Cant Type Fast Enough!!!!!!
« Reply #10 on: June 04, 2009, 03:42:51 PM »
Ok,, I have recieved quite a few E-Mails & PM,s about this post. I have replyed to a few but I cant type fast enough!! I am very reluctant to post my "shade tree" methods here,, but Im gonna have to or I will never be able to answer all that have asked. The cut: I usually use my 12" metal chop saw with water running on the brl. during the cut. My Friend borrowed my saw so today I resorted to using a new hack saw!!Either way,, I mark the brl with masking tape where Im gonna cut it. I then mark a cleaning rod with tape & insert a pellet into the muzzle end so I will be just cutting thru the tip of the pellet. This keeps cuttings from getting into the brl. I then carefully bevel the edges & tru up the end of the brl with a fine cutting metal file. For the crown: I use a high quality woodworkers countersink bit. It is important to use one with a 4 cutter head if posible. I use # 6 for 177 & # 8 for 22 cal. I carefully wrap the drill bit part with just enough masking tape for a snug fit in the brl. I use the bit then to push what is left of the previously parcial cut pellet to push it in so the bit fits in. With my cordless drill on low speed setting I CAREFULLY begin to cut the crown a little at a time,, checking as I go. (I use PLENTY of gun oil for this) When the crown "looks" good,, I then run the drill in reverse for a few seconds with VERY light preasure. I then clean the end out & use chrome polish on an older bit in reverse again at a little higher speed for a few seconds. I then do the ole Q-Tip test to see if any fibers hang up in the rifling groves. I ALWAYS then clean the brl from the breach end with patches. DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!Tim.

Hey, thanks for the vote of confidence!  I figure I've got at least 4 attempts at the chop before I send it off to Rich in Mich to have him fit a .20 LW barrel!
