Pellets for .177 B26
« on: June 11, 2009, 06:31:52 AM »
Mike or whoever is watching.  Do you guys have a recommendation for B-26 .177 pellets.  Sportsmans wharehouse packed up and left.  CHPs don't work too well as it seems that they are not heavy enough.  I think I need at least 8.3gr.  If I make it to South Austin the Cabelas has a store brand at 10.7gr or so but thats a fer piece to drive so I think I'm gonna have to just order.  I see that Pyramid has a Fathers day 15% off code.  So if I'm ordering, I'll order a bunch and I'd like to make the best guess possible.  I'm inclinded toward the domed variety.  The Wolverines were pretty good but that was a Sprotrsmans wharehouse thing.

Why don't you try some of those Crosman Heavies at 10.5 grains?  They are designed like the Crosman premiers but are+ 2.5 gr.   From what I understand, you don't want to go too heavy of a pellet or too light.  Too heavy  and too light causes damage to the internals of an AG , from what I understand.

My main goal is to find an accurate pellet at the cheapest price.  And getting pellets here is a problem due to very limited selection.

My MM-tuned B26 likes Gamo Match. They shoot great -- teaspoons, tablespoons, poker chips out to 25m with open sights.

At $3.99 with free shipping, they're worth a try.

so far my Gammo hunters don't group very well.  It may be a case of pellet variation as I've heard several reports of quality variations lately with these hunters.    I'm still in the break in phase however.  Maybe some of those RWS Superdome .177 Cal, 8.3 Grains, would be a better compromise, not too heavy.  Once I go to 7.5grain there is a dramatic change in siting required and groups loosen up.  I am kinda surprised at the power of this rifle.

I'm stayin with iron sites.  That way I don't see so much wobble.  :-)

Mine likes Gamo match. Tried seven other types and they all end up with fliers. Tried RWS superdomes, superdome HP, Wolverines, Gamo Pro Mag's, CPHP's, Chi com cheapies, and Arizona Air Gun's same as JSB Exacts.

Pricey but try Beeman FTS

I have a B26 in .22 and she can plink with anything, but I get ragged holes at 20 yards with FTS.

While I agree with most that 8gr pellets for a .177 safe, I have found slightly heavier pellets like FTS or JSBs work remarkably better than CPLs in all my springers.  The R7 does Okay with CPL, but single holes with FTS.  My new MM B40 .177 also really likes the FTS.  Haven't tried Predators in any of them yet, and I'm hoping!  I may have a cottontail spot!  Either way, FTS seems to work well in a hunting role so I;m not worried.

I'm a firm believer in the FTS as the first pellets to try in any new gun.  For some reason, they seems to wrok great.

I have noticed that pellets that fit really tight, like CPLs or CPLHPs tend to have larger groups.  Too loose a pellet is less an issue as long as the lead if fairly soft like the Gamo rounds.

I had a chance to go to the range alone for the day. I went on a quest to find out which .177 pellet my B-26 likes.
The results were interesting.

I started out using Crossman HP 7.9 gr when I first bought the B-26, and I was happy with them.
After hearing how great other pellets were, I figured I just had to know if anything was better.
I bought 10 different types of pellets this weekend, went to the range and shot all of them at the same outing.
I fired 5 shots of each different pellet at the target.
I repeated the test twice with pretty much the same results.

I set up at 25 yds. because that's were most of my hunting is done. Now that I know what it likes best, I'll go back and plot out different ranges.
I first shot 5 targets with the 5 different pellets. I was totally disappointed with the groups. The best group was 1 3/4".  I've shot less than 200 pellets
in this gun since new. I decided to clean the barrel, and it made the world of difference. I reshot, and the best group was less than 3/4".
I never thought that less than 200 pellets would really dirty it up so much.

So...
This was in no way a scientific event. While I'm not the best shot, I am consistent in my firing and hold.
With that said, I found my B-26 not very hold sensitive.
I fired 5 shots using the Crossman HP's (because I already know they shoot good) from each of 4 different hold positions from front edge to just in front of the trigger.
They were all grouped pretty much the same.

I tried shooting from my bench rest and found that no matter which pellet I tried, they all grouped like a shot gun all over the place.
It doesn't like being locked in place. My B-26 likes to be held. I rested my hand on the sand bags and leaned my shoulder against the post.
Every shot was aimed at the bulls eye. I bought a Gamo sample pack. The package had a description of the type of pellet and the weight of each type.
When I opened the package, the pellet weights on the tins were all different than that on the package, so I'm really not sure of the Gamo pellet weights tested.

May we have a drum role please...

The Crossman HP's 7.9 gr were the best; they were nice and tight grouped at 25 yds. I'd say 5/8" by my unseady hands.
They were dramatically better than all the rest. I just got back in tonight, and I didn't measure the other groupings yet.
I will post the target picture tomorrow after I cut-n-paste them into one photo.

From good to worse by C-T-C accuracy :

1. Crossman HP's 7.9 gr
2. Predators 8.0 gr poly tip
3. Gamo Match  wad cutter
4. Gamo Hunter dome
5. Crossman Destroyer Pointed HP (very poor attempt at copying a predator...more like a cross between  pointed ,HP, match)
6. Gamo Master Point
7. JSB Exact Diabolo 8.4 gr domed
8. Crossman Heavy 10.5 gr domed
9. RWS Superdome 8.3 gr domed
10. Gamo Pointed Magnum ( I thought I was a shotgun)

BUT... If I had to pick which ones I thought performed best, I would have to list them differently below.
My reasoning being that although they were not as accurate C-T-C as some of the other pellets, they were on target
better for point of impact in regard to where the scope was sighted in to. (all hit around the bulls eye)
The other 5 pellets were grouped either to the right, top, upper right in regard to the bulls eye.
Sometimes you have to use what you got until you re-order.
In a pinch, I feel that I could use any of these below and not have to re-sight in the scope each time I changed pellet.

Best performers by point of aim:

1. Crossman HP
2. Predator
3.Crossman Destroyer
4. JSB Exact Diabolo
5. RWS Superdome

This is how it worked for me. Maybe someone has a different or better pick. Remember, your mileage may vary... and

YES, 250 pellets later, my arm is tired.

Make The Decision...Your Gonna Get The Blame Anyway.

For some reason, must be subconscious on my part, but mine just does not like HPs.  In the back of mind I'm thinking if that hollow area is not exact then things are not ballanced. OTOH, I think the real issue  is  that she  wants something at least 8.4gr.  7.5gr and the velocity gets too high.  And those gammo pointy things, Katy bar the door.

I have some of the Exacts and they are pretty exact.  Also the Wolverines are nice.  Again 8.4gr.  and those Cabela 10.3 are great too.

I have not tried a death grip to check  the hold sensitivity.  I figured she would not like that.

Walt,

I was having issues with my QB57 and read this post just for the fun of it.
After reading your post, I went out and tried the Gamo Match pellets in mine, and suddenly, I was shooting a different gun!
It is now accurate as hell, and these pellets work like a champ!
So thank Sir, you've relieved me of a great deal of frustration!
