Gamo BigCat 1200 2-9x40 scope, set on 4x CPHP, did re-crowing work,  different hold..... For some reason I was shooting low, so I tried to compensate, though near the end I over compensated.

Starting to get the hang of the new peep sight.  Got it dialed in pretty well, now all I need is practice practice practice.  I'll be shooting some more matches on Thursday, this is it for today.  The rain continues.

New Gun!  Daisy 953 w/Tasco 3 x 9
Crosman .177 Premium Pointed
10m  Off Hand Standing
Score:  182 - 2x/200

Shot this with my Fathers Day present which was delivered yesterday.  The Daisy 953 is one sweet shootin' gun.  I wish I had bought one of these about two guns ago.  A couple more days practice and I'm going to try the 30 yd. Bench Rest match.

I plan to be out in the feild this weekend shooting, not in my basement! So, need to get a few of these done. 2 last night (one on another forum) and 2 tonight...

Stuck with the new HW97. Still getting some horizontal stringing... still working on the right grip. But the worst shot on this target was simply me pushing the shot.
Too many of the 10's were just near hits. Still needs some work but I'll take the result for only having her since friday.

Therman,
If you think you like your 953, do the trigger mod (at least the one to remove the burrs from the trigger sear) and you will like it even more.
My beef w the x53 is the trigger is not finished.  The sear on mine had so many burrs that it felt really gritty, like dragging a 2x4 over a rough asphalt road.
I deburred the sear and the trigger is like a night and day improvement.

Of the 3 trigger mods, deburring the trigger sear gives you the MOST improvement.

Shot this and the Steriod 15 match on Monday....but was too lazy to photograph and post them. The lightness of the Big Cat really hampers the accuracy.....in this match I still get a few points outside of the "black"...but not in the Steriod match.

156/200 Open Rifle #21 and advice sought
« Reply #8 on: June 24, 2009, 11:35:42 AM »
Last week I used the Daisy 953 with Avanti Peep set front and rear. As I was practicing for this weeks match, the 953 must have blown a valve or seal or O-ring or something because I can pump no problem -- good pressure, but there's hardly any air behind the pellet when I pull the trigger. It sounds and feels like the air is blowing out the sides of the receiver area when  it fires. I'll have to get in there to see what's going on. Any suggestions as to what might have happened would be appreciated.

So, I moved the rear peep to the B26. This week was much harder -- with the Avanti rear and the front stock sight (fiber optic with guard).  I did not expect the springer to be that much harder to shoot but it was. Part of it's the recoil, I think. I'm still getting the peep sighted in but by the last bull, I think I'm close. I also noticed that I could not get clean holes with the 953 but now they are nice and clean. A huge difference in the fps has fixed my ragged hole problem. Now to work on my sight picture -- should I put the fiber optic on the bull or should I put the bull above the optic just as I would with regular open sights?

Practice, practice, practice... HL

Well, for me I would put the bull on top of the fiber optic.  If I put the optic on the bull....I tend to shoot low because just before the gun goes off I would lower the gun to see the bull.....bad habit, but something that I couldn't break.  I would guess some more disciplined shooters can block out the bull with their front sight and still hit it.....

WMassShooter
I concur w gamo2hammerli.
When I shoot w my red-dot, if the dot is near or bigger than the target, I put the dot below the target just like I would the front blade of an open iron sight with the 6-oclock sight picture.  Of course I would have to resight the red-dot to compensate for the change in the sight picture, since I am now aiming the red-dot lower than the desired point of impact.

You have another option.  The fiber optic front sight on the 953 is screw clamped to a rail.  Remove it and install your Avanti globe front sight.  Then you can use the aperture inserts, which are MUCH better for target shooting.  You just have to select and use the correct size aperture to match the target and how steady your hold is.  The general rule is to choose a diameter that will keep the bull INSIDE the aperture MOST of the time.  As your hold gets better and steadier, you can move to smaller size apertures.  And if you are having a bad day, you simply use a larger aperture.
