what do you think of bam b50/51?
« on: July 05, 2009, 08:51:10 AM »
I posted this on the other forum and did some reading, but I suppose no harm done if I ask this here as well-- what's your opinion about the B50/51? I have read a couple of good reviews and some bad ones-- but my wholly positive experience with a qb78 suggests that may be looking at the Chuntsman is worth it. So here's in detail:

A) I am looking for my first PCP. I am a beginner shooter and I want an equivalent of a service trainer-- rugged and reliable, though not the smoothest or fanciest. I shoot with a loop sling; so synthetic stocks are out, so are those expensive British PCP's with a bottle where my handstop/ sling swivel should be-- heaven knows how one shoots those in the prone position!
B)I am looking for a gun that can keep an inch at 50 yards consistently, which is the longest I shoot and 2 MOA is way better than what I can shoot now.
C) I shoot paper or little targets, so ideally I want a .177  gun tuned between 16-18 fpe with lots of shots in the sweet spot-- power is not a concern.
D) I want a simple sporter stock which can take sling swivels; the fore-end must be long enough to have the swivel between 25-27'' and I want the LOP to be at least 14''.
E) I don't mind a heavier or longer rifle; in fact it will probably shoot more accurately in my hand.
F) A repeater will be nice, but a single shot is absolutely fine as well.
G) I shoot in my backyard-- so probably a quiet gun is better, though there is no need for it to be a whisper. I have a stock 78 and the report is acceptable.

The cheapest and most reliable rifle that fulfills all these is enough for me. Given this, would you suggest I get,

i) A Mac 1 tuned Discovery
ii) A Big ED tuned B50/51(what tunes?)
iii) Forget everything else and get a Marauder/ some other $500-600 new PCP.
iv) Look for some used PCP on the classified (my budget is $650 at most for the gun itself) and in that case what guns should I look out for?

Many of you have had experience with lots of PCP's; what would your suggestion be? Thanks for all advices and please point out other criteria/ concerns I should have, but haven't listed here because of my inexperience. Thanks again,

the marauder will fit your bill nicely. Good power, decent reliability and quiet to boot. The bam 51 (50 no longer available.) is a crap shoot. you might get a good one  or you might get a crappy one. They are really accurate, but also very noisy. the discovery is awesome for the sling, but noisy... how bout a airarms s200? i got one and is super accurate, powerful enough and somewhat silent. chek them out

I agree,,, get a Marauder,,,, will give you just what you need.  Mine is .22 and it's awesome...  Quiet, accurate, clips work well, already set up for a sling, nice balance, more than enough power to be an excellent hunter but also great for target shooting, a ton of shots on a fill.... just doesn't get any better....

There is a TKO braked Discovery on the yellow forum for sale.  I will give you a link after I decide if I want it or not:)

I love my B50 but I would love to have a Marauder because it's quiet and multi-shot.

What sort of groups are you getting with your B50? Have you tuned it in any way? At what fill pressure is it set and how many shots are you getting out of it? Sorry to post a bunch of questions, but simply curious. I of course would love to get a Marauder, but if I can sort of test waters with a cheaper alternative I should like to do so and that's why I'm trying to get as much information as possible. Thanks for the response,
