4-16x40 Too Big?
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:25:07 AM »
Is a 4-16x40 scope too big (strong) for a Gamo Bigcat?  Most of my shooting will be at about 20 yards (gophers that damn rabbit!). I hate the POS that came with the rife and really like the Center point 4-16x40... Wondering if it is overkill...

Thank you

If I can get one at a decent price I'd put one on my Big Cat.  The original 3X9-40mm is just not powerful enough when I'm shooting pass 30 meters.

Answer to your question.... No.  I use a 4-12x40 on a Gamo Big Cat.  It enables you to find targets that without the magnification you would not be able to spot in trees. bushes, grasses  etc.

I found a squirrel today hiding in a pine that without the extra magnification I would not have seen.  He is not hiding any longer.

I've got a couple of the Wally World Centerpoint 4x16x40s on my boy's Gamos and they work fine.  Get yourself a medium Leapers Accushot one piece mount, make sure you Loctite the screws when you tighten everything down and you'll be good to go.

Thanks for the advise guys.  I did go and buy the scope and it looks very nice.  However, I can NOT get it to mount to the rifle with the Accushot medium mount?

I purchased the Centerpoint 4-16x40mm and the Accushot medium scope mount and the scope is still too low.  The front of the scope bottoms out on the receiver and the tube will not rest in the rings?  It appears that I need the high mount.

What mounts are you guys using?

Thank you,

R60--I wonder if these guys "shimmed" their scopes or maybe adjusted the scope forward or backward to give more clearance? I use high mounts most of the time--but in order to not have to order new mounts and wait for delivery--you could try shimming---I've used small slices (1/2" x 3/4") fromaluminum soda cans--and Ive also used camera film negatives---though not many people seem to have those anymore.Oh yeah, I also used 3-5 pieces of electrical tapeon the inside of the rings to lift as well. The difficulty with shimming is that with bigger recoiling rifles---the shims can slide out from under the rings---not sure which may work for you but can't hurt to try----one last tip with the electrical tape--the least amount you need to lift the better---its more likely to slip with more pieces stacked on top of each other. Good luck

Unless your Big Cat has the aluminum riser that Gamo puts on some of their rifles, you'll need the high mount for the scope rail.  The front AO adjustment (along with the flip caps) of the Centerpoint doesn't leave enough clearance using the medium mount.  As for shimming to obtain the necessary height, it's probably not a good idea...just order a high mount.

Bob's right---ordering a high mount is the better idea---only offered shimming as quick fix or if not able to purchase at the moment---take care
