Bushnell 4-12x40 Scope
« on: July 11, 2009, 07:58:09 AM »
Always on the look-out for a bargain , I was in  K-Mart and saw a Bushnell 4-12x40 Riflescope on sale. It was normally $80.00 was marked down to $60.00 and was on clearance for $40.00. Hmmmmmm, I say to myself, try it , it may be OK.  Well, I get back to my favorite forum and I see where a Bushnell 4-12x40 has been reviewed. I then realize that I may have a different scope altogether. The ones mention in the review don't seem to be the same model that  I purchased. The one purchased is model 72-0412C , with  the word SPORTSMAN noted on the label. It does state that it is waterproof/fogproof and shockproof, multicoated /fast focus eyepiece, 1/4" windage and elevation adjustments, easy grip power change ring. On the back of the package the specifiactions state: 4-12 magnification, 40 objective aperture/ field of view Feet@100yds 25@4, 8.5@12, Reticle Multi-X, weight14.6 oz, length 13.75 Oz.

I don't know whether that information is relevent or not in determining the value or quality of the scope. I went to some web sites and saw it selling from $150 to $79.00. The adjustment rings are not rubberized and seem to be some type of slick plastic, and are really stiff when turned. The place of construction is China. Anybody heard of or used this scope? I found conflicting info as one web site said it could be used for break barrel guns while the other sites only mention that it could be used for medium recoil weapons. Did I get a GOLDEN GOOSE or a DUCK?  I can still return it.

I have a Beeman RS2 and a Ruger Air Hawk and don't know whether these would be considered hard hiters or not.

Ben, don't be hatin' that scope. It's a good bargain for $40.00. They sell for $69.00 at my local Wal-Mart. I have at least 4-5 of these scopes, all on springers. No problems or complaints. A pretty good cheap scope.

Ben:

Are the numbers on the magnification adjustment ring quite large?  I have a couple of the same scopes, though mine are much older and are made in Japan.  You probably have a rifle scope and not an air rifle scope.  The scopes don't have an AO adjustment bell up front and have a fixed parallax, eithe 50 or 100 yards.  Mine are 32mm scopes and have served me very well on my Ruger 10-22.  The stiff mag ring will loosen up just a bit with use, but practically speaking, for my .22, I don't change the mag setting much.  And mine is marked "Sportview rather than "Sport man", though I suspect we are talking the same or very similar scope.  I was always fond of these in my younger days because the smaller scope with KwikSite mounts meant I could still use either the iron sights that came on the Ruger or the scope.  Mine are still going strong after more than 25 years of use.
