« on: July 13, 2009, 09:27:06 AM »
Whats the best hand pump out there. Looking for feedback on how well they work, & mostly on how well they hold up. The best pump aint no good if it breaks al the time.

The two pumps out there that are generally acknowledged as being the best, ie. function, durability, rebuildable are the Hill and the FX. I have a FX pump and am very satisfied with it. I would advise you to only consider these two, all the rest are pretty much junk, IMHO.

Definitely the Hill pump,it's a bit pricey but well worth the extra money & you can never go wrong with The FX pump, another quality pump!

Have a Hill and an old-old FX.

Hill is quite a bit larger/heavier, is built to be easily taken apeart, and there are rebuild kits (sets of o-rings) available.  It is probably the easiest pump to take apart and self service.

FX is smaller/lighter, but I'm not real sure about the current FX's....this one is two generations back, still working, the current version is a whole lot like it, but I've not owned one.

I'd buy a Hill (Pilkguns for about $259 with dry pack).

I did a lot of reading on forums, looking for people's opinions of different pumps. Ended up buying a Hill pump & DryPac from Pilkguns. I've only had it a couple of months, but seems solidly built.

I have my Hill pump about two weeks now.  I purchased it based on their reputation.  I also like the fact that rebuild kits are available.  Time will tell I guess.  Good luck with whatever you decide.

I did alot of rerearch before buying and have a hill pump. Pilkingtons had the best deal at the time, I got the filter pack as I use it in humid conditions sometimes and felt it was a good idea to keep miosture out. Tony.

This question is to anyone who has both pumps. Which one is easier to rebuild? Sounds like Hill with Dry-pac is the way to go.

Joe:

What about the Air Venturi G4 pump?  Is it considered inferior to either the Hill or the FX and if so, why?

hill is easier to rebuild, pumps more air per stroke, and is considerably harder to pump
over 150bar,  FX stage 4 pump is much easier to pump but pumps less air per stroke
so it takes longer and requires more strokes.  both are high quality

I just bought a G4 from Pyramyd Air and it broke before even filling the rifle the first time. Didn't even get air pressure out of the yellow zone into the green before it went Pfffffffffffffffft and all the air pressure leaked out of the bottom of the outer/inner sleeve. Not out of the bleed screw, at the bottom of the sleeve that goes up and down for pumping.

If this experience is any indication and Pyramyds 'service' is typical, save your money. I will get something else... somewhere else. No more pyramyd 'service' for me after this and their attitude in how they handle getting a replacement.
