I was going to go squirrel and rabbit hunting early this morning but changed my mind. I figured since it was Sunday I might run into other hunters, and if I'm gonna still hunt for squirrels I'd really rather have the woods to myself. I plan on hitting those woods tomorrow when everyone else goes back to work, so today I decided to go to the duck farm and hunt for starlings and pigeons.
Just like the other day there were huge flocks of starlings going after the grain feeders, but they were just as skiddish as they were the other day also. I tried everything I could think of to get close enough for shots but nothin worked. The birds always got spooked and immediately flew off.
I tried hiding next to farm equipment, hiding in bushes, hiding in the woods near a tree they were roosting in, and even tried hiding inside the barns, but never even got a single shot. Very frustrating to say the least. After 2 hours of enduring the freezing cold and the stiff wind that popped up which made it feel even colder, I finally admitted that the birds had won. I did have a 12 gauge and a couple of boxes of #9 shot in the truck that I brought along just in case, but I really didn't want to have to resort to that,,,, I really wanted to get em with the air rifle.
Next trip I think I'm gonna bring some of my camo netting and set up a concealed ground blind. Maybe that would work. Well, if it wasn't challenging it wouldn't be any fun right?
