Webley Tempest lube advice
« on: July 19, 2009, 10:02:17 AM »
Hey all.

I bought this pistol in 1994 or so.  I've enjoyed it's camera equipment aura for all these years and have been vexed trying to be accurate with it all this time!  It's .177 and like really light pellets like silver bears and H&N wadcutters.

I've asked Mike Melick if he would tune it, and even over the phone I could see his head shaking, "Nah."

Another air gunner sent me the break down chart, and really this little pistol is a "pistol" to take apart!

My question is this.  It's been many many years since I bothered to lube it.  Mostly since I was never sure what to use or how to apply it.

So:
I want to lube this pistol but I do not want to disassemble it.  I have the usual lubes on hand; clear, green and moly.  I was thinking of making a solution of moly and another petroleum ester and introduce a Q-tip of the solution into the piston area.  Or I could create a more liquid solution ( Moly paste and SAE 30?  Or Moly paste dissolved in denatured alcohol or WD-40?) and put a few drops in to that area.

What I don't want to do is leave it as dry as I suspect it is now.

The gun is shooting around 350 to 400fts with the light pellets.  I'm not trying to increase velocity, but simply trying to lube it gently for the next 10 years.

Additionally, does anyone know what material the seal is made of?

Thanks for your wisdom and advice!

Neil

We have been using the Tempest for English Sparrows on the feeder.  The gun is very quiet and plenty for "Dirt Sparrows."  Neighbors will not complain since they don't know...  I originally thought my R7 would be good for this duty, but even the R7 is too loud and powerful for this job.

I'm thinking some moly diluted in SAE30 and give the piston a light coat of 3 or 4 drops.  I'm just not sure.  On the other hand, disolving the Moly into a drying esther would be a better way to go since I really only want the moly in there.  I just don't know what to mix with the moly to get it around the piston without gumming up the works!

I'm all ears to hear what the GTA'perts have to say!

Seems a few drops of synthetic motor oil will do the trick.  I'm still wondering if melting some moly in the Mobil 1 would be a good idea.  Doesn't take much moly really, to let it do it's thing.

Thought this may be useful.

An idiots guide to the Webley Tempest strip

-- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This strip will be easy for me to do. Remove sights and grips. Drift out barrel catch pivot if you want to grease it and the plunger. Remove pin at front of plastic cylinder sleeve and remove sleeve.Knock out pins at either end of triggr guard and remove it and the little sear spring. Remove the other pins one at a time to remove sear stop pin, sear, trigger and trigger spring. It then strips like the other Webley pistols. After that do this> On 6/6/2009 Vulcanator put the sheets up on lobbermans thread (I dont know how to turn image round!). What I will say is this--follow the guide regarding the sear otherwise the thing wont cock (seen two with this problem). The easiest way Ive found to fit the safety catch is to just put it in with the cut out facing the back of the trigger and then fit the safety spring. The other thing is when you replace the endcap and guide, make sure the little plate the cocking arm pushes against is in place or the gun wont cock. I did that one Saturday night and then saw the bit in the tin I,d put the bits in, DOH!
This guide should do the Hurricane and old Typhoon.
By the way--As these have the split ptfe washer, I have wound 1 turn of ptfe tape round the spiggot it goes on before replacing washer to save on getting new washer as the gun is just for plinking. Works under "O" rings too.
