Marauder VS Tallon ss. Need advice
« on: July 22, 2009, 12:28:44 PM »
Hi DarkSiders,

I’m looking to buy my first PCP, and was all set to buy a Marauder in .117, but I’m still considering the Talon SS in .117. The obvious advantage to the Marauder is the multi-shot capability, accuracy, and the fact it is very quiet. The Talon SS is quiet and I like the possibility of getting the 24” barrel in .22 so that I could have the power if I wanted it. I mainly shoot paper and cans but pest control is always a possibility. Do any of you own both? I’d love to get feedback from owners.

If I do get the Marauder I want to put a 4-12 or 4-16 scope on it. Pyramyd has a great deal on the Lepers 4-16X40, but I own a  Leapers 4-9X40 (on a .117 Gamo Whisper) now, and although it’s a great scope for the money, I would like to get a better scope for my next gun. Centerpoint has what looks like a good scope in it’s 4-16X40 for $120 at Pyramyd, but if any of you has a favorite scope below $150 I’d love to know about it.

Thanks in advance,

Don

MASON... I HAVE THE MARAUDER .177 AND I DO A LOT OF PAPER TARGET. THE RIFLE IS EXCELLENT AND SUPER ACCURATE.

I DO NOT HAVE THE TALON SS.. BUT I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF REVIEWS AND SOME VIDEOS THE RIFLE IS EXCELLENT TOO...BUT...BUT... IT IS A SINGLE SHOT.  I CAN SHOT OVER 9 TIMES MORE SHOTS IN A DAY THAN THE TALON... ALTHOUGH THE MARAUDER IT IS NOT SO HEAVY THAN OTHER OF MY RIFLES... I CHOOSE THE MARAUDER FOR THAT A MULTI SHOTS  AND QUIET AND POWERFUL THAN THE TALON SS.... I HAVE NEIGHBORDS NEXT TO ME AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHEN I AM SHOOTING... MORE FUN AND MORE SHOTS.

Don,,,, I own a Talon with an 18 inch .22 barrel and shroud and I also own a .22 Marauder.

They are both outstanding rifles.  Both are excellent target guns and both are excellent small game guns.  I also have a .22 condor..... and I must say that I absolutely love my air force rifles but.................

That being  said my advice is this........  if this is going to be your first PCP then go with the Marauder.  It will come set up from the factory shooting with plenty of power and amazing accuracy,,, you won't have to do anything at all except air it up and start shooting.  If further down the line, as you gain experience, you want to start tuning the Marauder for more or less power than you can easily do that.  Also,, the Marauder has a beautiful trigger right from the box that can also be tweaked to suit your needs.    I like my Talon trigger but you can't really adjust it and it is not even close to being as nice as the marauder triggers.

Also, you can tune and adjust the talon for power settings, but a big part of this involves in depth testing with a chronograph while you play with the "tophat" settings.  Not really a hard project to do, but you need a chrony to do it along with the experience level.

Get the Marauder.... you won't be sorry... you can always get an air force rifle later on, but you won't regret getting the marauder.....

Others may give you different advice, but this is mine.....

Jeff & Gerald:

I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to get the Marauder. It sure seems I can't go wrong. Good thing I have held onto my scuba tanks. They are going to get a workout.

Don, you're making a good decision.  You're gonna love the Marauder.  I forgot to mention that the other nice thing about the Marauder is that it comes with sling swivels already installed in the stock.  All you have to do is clip on the sling of your choice and you're all set.  You can also attach a bipod to the front sling swivel mount as well if you're into bipods.   The Marauder is a great PCP....  it comes set up from the factory for a 2500 psi fill.  Mine, which is .22 caliber, with factory settings is giving me 60 shot strings starting around 850 then climbing to give me 20-25 shots in the 920 range then slowly dropping down back into the low 800's by the time I reach shot #60.  You simply can't beat that kind of performance.  Starting at 2500 psi and recharging at 1500 psi I'm getting something like 40 refills out of my scuba tank.

Jorge,,,,, my answer to you is very simple......... if you want a rifle that's going to easily take out small game and medium sized game (g-hogs)  at ranges of 70 - 80 yards then get yourself a Condor  :)  You simply won't believe the power (and the accuracy).

I have no doubt a Talon or SS with a 24 inch barrel would get the job done at longer ranges as well but that would entail buying the Talon or the SS and then having to purchase the 24 inch barrel.... you might as well just buy the Condor and start shooting right from the box  :)
